Gwinnett To Launch Volunteer Initiative

Program goal is to reach a million volunteer hours per year by 2015.

A new Gwinnett County program will offer residents an easy way to learn about and participate in area volunteer opportunities.

On Aug. 16, county commissioners approved a resolution to establish a countywide volunteer program. The Volunteer Gwinnett program was created in response to an Engage Gwinnett committee recommendation aimed at encouraging residents to participate in volunteer activities while supporting government operations and potentially saving money.

“Volunteer Gwinnett gives residents an opportunity to serve one another for the common good. Everyone can make a difference, and I encourage my fellow residents to join me in keeping our community a great place to live, work and play,” said Norwood Davis, an Engage Gwinnett committee member, in a released statement.

The Volunteer Gwinnett website is under development. The program will include a standardized registration and training process.

According to a county news release, Gwinnett County Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash said she hopes volunteers will feel a sense of community and accomplishment through their service.

“I am already so thankful for the folks who give their time and talent to county government through our existing volunteer programs. I look forward to seeing the results of involving even more citizens through this new countywide initiative,” she said.

Volunteers currently assist the county with certain events and activities. In 2010, county volunteers logged more than 300,000 hours of service.

Are you going to include current programs that residents may not be aware of? Juvenile Court has three. The Sheriff's Department has a Seniors in Action Volunteer opportunity for those 55 and over.
