Hilscher Joins Suwanee City Council

"Welcome to life in the fishbowl," Suwanee Mayor Pro Tem Dan Foster told Beth Hilscher on Tuesday, not long after she took the oath of office to become the newest City Council member.

became the third City Council member to take office since 2010. She takes over from Jace Brooks, who resigned to seek the District 1 position on the Gwinnett Board Of Commissioners.

"Overwhelmed" was how Hilscher felt after City Council members headed into executive session Tuesday after the regular meeting. "There's a lot of learning to do."

Now Hilscher can add public official to her duties of business owner, spouse and parent. Her husband Steve and children attended Tuesday's meeting.

"She's always been very involved, since college," Steve Hilscher said of his wife.

Indeed, Hilscher already was known around City Hall as vice chairman of the city's Downtown Development Authority. That agency boosts development in the Town Center and Old Town areas.

Among other things, the DDA is pushing to have a national Historic District established in Old Town. That district would include Pierce's Corner, which is under a lease/purchase agreement to a Gwinnett development group led by Norcross attorney Michael Deming Sr.
