New Suwanee Mayor Pro Tem? Think Foster

The longtime City Council member may get No. 2 post.

There will be more changes coming this month at City Hall in Suwanee among the elected leaders.

The expected departure of Mayor Pro Tem Jace Brooks in mid-year means the council members will elect a new No. 2 at the January council meeting Tuesday at . And look out for Dan Foster to be that person.

"We're working on Dan," Mayor Jimmy Burnette said after his recent State Of The City speech.

Brooks has said he will seek the District 1 seat on the Gwinnett Board of Commissioners. Formal declaration is in May, and Brooks then would formally resign from the Suwanee council and a special election would be held to fill his spot. Safe to say that Suwanee's leaders won't put him back in the No. 2 spot.

After Brooks, Foster (elected in 2006) and Kevin McOmber (elected in 2007) now are the longest-serving council members. Dick Goodman is in his first full term, and Doug Ireland just took office.

The mayor pro tem is the "vice mayor," and so has to preside over governmental meetings if the mayor is unable to do so.

Foster is heavily involved with the Harvest Farm Managing Board, which oversees the popular community garden at White Street Park.

An avid athlete, Foster has run in the Peachtree Road Race and was part of a bicycling effort to the state Capitol last year called Georgia Rides To The Capitol.

Foster could not be reached for comment.
