Suwanee 2012 Budget Vote at Hand

Vote on new spending plan is possible at Tuesday's City Council meeting.

The Suwanee City Council could vote on its Fiscal Year 2012 budget at Tuesday's meeting. The tentative amount is $11.8 million, and it would take effect in July.

Also on Tuesday's agenda is a possible vote on the city's capital improvement plan for 2012-2016. That figure is $24.9 million.

The budget amount represents a 5.5 percent increase from the original 2011 budget; however that has grown to $12.2 million with changes approved since the adoption. For instance, last month City Council members approved a transfer of $930,000 into the city's general fund to cover a shortfall from SPLOST funds from Gwinnett County.

The biggest source of projected revenues for 2012 are property taxes, commercial ($2.9 million) and residential ($2.3 million). Also, various business taxes are expected to bring in $2.9 million.

The biggest expenditures are police ($4.1 million) and public works ($1.8 million).

On the capital improvement plan, the biggest chunk ($14.7 million) is marked for transportation. Projects include Buford Highway Corridor improvements ($5.7 million) and resurfacing projects ($4.2 million). Also, $1.18 million is budgeted for Suwanee Creek Greenway rehabilitation.
