Suwanee Accepting Proposals for 9/11 Artifact

Artists and designers are invited to embellish the 1,600-pound steel piece for permanent display.

The City of Suwanee has begun the process of requesting and accepting proposals for permanent display of its 9/11 artifact, named Remembrance.

The 1,600-pound steel remnant from one of the World Trade Center towers arrived in the city in mid-year 2011, and was unveiled at a City Hall ceremony on Sept. 10, 2011. It has been off display since January 2012, while officials debate where and how it should be permanently located.

Appropriately, the deadline for proposals is Sept. 11, 2012, with Sept. 11, 2013, being the target date for the project completion.

The total project cost is estimated at $15,000 to $70,000, according to the RFP.

The city's Public Arts Commission will screen the applicants, with finalists presented to the City Council on Nov. 15.

Also, the RFP says that the city wants the piece located in the Town Center area. That also would include the area between the Suwanee Police Department and the Gwinnett Fire Station on Buford Highway.

Other points in the RFP include:

  • The proposer will be responsible for installation of the artifact.
  • The artifact's integrity must be maintained. Painting or coating "may be allowed ... but not necessarily encouraged."
  • The proposal can include a proposed location.
