Suwanee Businessman To Own First Package Store in Grayson

Tucker, also owner of Beverage Superstore in Suwanee, was the successful applicant out of the three submitted to City Council officials.

After hearing three applications for the first package store license to be issued in the city of Grayson, officials voted unanimously Tuesday to approve the application by Suwanee businessman Richard Tucker.

Applications were submitted by Joe Kalish, owner of Grayson Jewelers at Parkside, Heather Weaver, co-owner of Bottle Shop & Liquor-Madison in Madison, and Tucker. At the end of the night, Tucker was the one who went home with the license to proceed and Kalish and Weaver went home disappointed. Both Kalish and Weaver said they would take stock of their positions before deciding on the next step.

Kalish had a lot vested in the project having mounted the original campaign to get it on the ballot. Weaver said she and her husband, Russ, too had a lot riding on the license. They have a contract on their package store in Madison since it had been their intention to move to Grayson had their application been successful.

All three applicants had a spot picked out for their proposed stores and contracts pending on the property ready in the event theirs was the store chosen.

Some Loganville officials attended the meeting to see how the process played out. Loganville Mayor Ray Nunley has said the city is interested in exploring the possibility of possibly two package stores in the city. He said interest has been expressed in the idea. However, it would require a petition drive by a potential applicant and citizen approval by way of a referendum first.

Tucker also owns Beverage Superstore on Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road. He recently turned over the license to Beverage Superstore II 0n Peachtree Industrial Boulevard to business partner Wayne Mason. That move allowed Tucker to obtain the Grayson license. Georgia law prohibits people from having a financial interest in more than two package stores.
