Suwanee Council Delays Decision on Gateway Project

Members want more information on a possible self-storage facility near I-85.

Suwanee City Council members Tuesday (Sept. 25) threw up a temporary road block on a new building project in the city's Gateway area.

The council voted to delay a rezoning decision that would allow a self-storage facility to be built on Sawmill Drive near I-85. Council member Doug Ireland, who made the motion to delay the vote, noted that he and other council members needed more information on the self-storage facility before making a final decision.

Suwanee city staff had recommended approval of the facility, which would be located at 345 Sawmill Drive, behind a Chevron station near I-85. The staff approval came although industrial zoning in that area is not called for by the city's comprehensive plan. Planning Director Josh Campbell noted that the project still would be an overall improvement for the beleaguered Gateway area.

As Council Member Kevin McOmber noted, the area is "heavy with Class A office space."

Council members voted to hear more information from Amburgy Properties, which wants to build the facilities, at the Oct. 11 City Council workshop.

Waylon Hoge of Integrity Engineering of Dacula is working with the self-storage facility project. He said after Tuesday's meeting that he "hopes it gets approved."

"I grew up in Dacula and remember when (the property) used to be an old Waffle House. It's time for it to be something else," Hoge added. "We want to find out what the city's concerns are."
