Dangerous Suwanee Intersection To Get Key Improvements

Suwanee and Gwinnett County officials are collaborating on changes to a major intersection that are aimed at pedestrian safety.

The governments plan a joint effort to "upgrade pedestrian access facilities" at Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and McGinnis Ferry Road, which has long been one of the city's most dangerous intersections.

The cost of the $150,000 project is being equally shared by the governments, and is set for the Suwanee City Council agenda in February.

Showing that public feedback was a factor in the project, Suwanee officials noted that the work was not provided for in the current capital projects plan. Suwanee would take its share of the cost out of the Facilities Enhancements Fund. Gwinnett would use SPLOST funds.

The physical work would be done by Gwinnett workers. Gwinnett spokesperson Joe Sorenson estimated that the work would begin in the spring.

This intersection regularly shows up on Suwanee Police "hot sheets" as among the heaviest in the city for traffic accidents. Also, the heavy traffic on both streets makes pedestrian crossings dangerous.
