Suwanee Has a Site in Mind for 9/11 Artifact

Unveiling is planned on Sept. 10 during ceremony.

Suwanee city officials are in agreement on a permanent site in the city for their recently acquired 9/11 artifact.

The 1,600-pound piece of steel likely will be put on permanent display at what is known at City Hall Park, between the Suwanee Police headquarters and Gwinnett Fire Station No. 13 on Buford Highway.

Many plans are still forming, but city officials are discussing having a base manufactured for the artifact, as well as redeveloping the park area.

Suwanee plans a formal unveiling of Remembrance, its name for the artifact, during a ceremony Sept. 10 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the attacks.

Mayor Dave Williams wanted to be able to convey to the public at that ceremony what officials were considering for a permanent display.

Officials considered several sites in the city, including in front of City Hall and at the developing police substation at I-85. However, officials felt a central location was best, and they also wanted to honor the public safety aspect of the attacks in 2001.

As part of the site evaluation process, City Council members viewed a series of photos in which Council Member Dick Goodman "photoshopped" an image of the artifact into locations around the city.

The artifact arrived in Suwanee in July via UPS; it had been stored in a JFK airport hangar in New York. It is one of 24 such artifacs in Georgia; Suwanee was selected after it responded to an RFP by Port Authority of New York. The city was responsible only for the $1,000 shipping cost.

Suwanee's ceremony will include a candlelight vigil, a color guard and a showing of the movie "World Trade Center" at Town Center Park.
