Suwanee Police May Get New Technology

Funds on the agenda for Tuesday's City Council meeting.

The Suwanee Police Department is about to get some new tools, pending City Council approval.

The council's March meeting is set for Tuesday (March 22) at City Hall at 7 p.m.

The department is in line for a $10,000 grant from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety. Lt. Cass Mooney of the Suwanee police said the money would be used to purchase tablet computers and printers for motorcycle officers. Then they would be able to issue tickets from their vehicles, just as patrol officers do. Also, Β a video camera system for recording traffic stops is part of the package. This is on the council's agenda Tuesday.

Also on the council's agenda is possible adoption of the Pedestrian Bicycle Plan, aka the Alternative Transportation Plan. Council delayed this from the January meeting.

Tier 1 of the plan would be implemented from 2011-15 at a total cost of $1.525 million. Among the highlights are enhanced crosswalks on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard at the Moore Road and Suwanee Dam Road intersections, and a pedestrian hybrid beacon at a key intersection. Also, several sidewalk additions are planned.
