Suwanee Prepares for 9/11 Ceremony

The formal unveiling of Suwanee's piece of 9/11 history will come Saturday, Sept. 10, in the city's own ceremony to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

“We’re planning a respectful, reverent, spine-tingling event,” says Office Administrator Billie Marshall in a media release.

The ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. at Town Center Park, which is right across from .

The city will put on display a 1,600-pound remnant of the World Trade Center towers that were destroyed in the attacks. Named Remembrance, the artifact arrived in Suwanee in July from New York and has been housed at the public works facility. It is one of only 24 in Georgia.

On Saturday, officials will put it on display near City Hall during the ceremony. It will remain there at least through Suwanee Day festivities on Sept. 17.

Eventually, the artifact will be moved to a permanent site, which is likely to be at City Hall Park, between Suwanee Police headquarters and Gwinnett Fire Station No. 13 on Buford Highway. The city's staff and elected officials considered several potential locations before deciding.

Also at the ceremony, a candlelight vigil is planned, and the movie "World Trade Center" will be shown at the park.

The movie is rated PG-13 for intense and emotional content, some disturbing images, and language, the city said on its website. Those staying for the movie should bring chairs and blankets. Food and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase.
