Suwanee Near Getting a Storm Warning System

The CodeRED system would have several warning platforms.

The City of Suwanee is closer to moving forward with a storm warning system for the community.

City officials have checked out a system called CodeRED, which is produced by Emergency Communications Network of Orlando, Fla. City Manager Marty Allen said Code Red is a "big player" on the emergency weather alert scene. City Council members got a briefing on the system Thursday at a work session.

According to CodeRED documents, the system is designed specifically to enable local government officials to "record, send and track" personalized voice, email, text and social media messages to citizens and staff. DeKalb County and Fulton County are among the many municipalities that already use the system.

The system also has a smartphone app, but that may not be part of what is provided to Suwanee citizens, Allen said.

Another advantage to CodeRED is that it already has 75 percent of Suwanee phone numbers programmed into its database. Also, the system could send out alerts on things other than weather, such as water-main breaks.
