Suwanee Votes and Waits

Voters turn out early Tuesday for the GOP presidential primary.

It was a typical election morning Tuesday for Connie Coupal.

The poll manager at Epiphany Lutheran Church in Suwanee, where Precinct 155 votes, notes that activity there is always strong.

"(Voters) were lined up before polls opened" Tuesday morning, she said. There are 2,900 registered voters in the precinct, and she said turnout in the 2008 presidential election -- about 60 percent -- was much better than predicted. "It was amazing," Coupal said.

"(The presidential election) will determine whether we have a free, democratic society in this country or go socialist."

Election buzz was also strong at a Starbucks in Suwanee. Patrons Ane Mulligan and Bob Juhl both already had voted for Gingrich.

Mulligan, also a blogger for Patch, said she has supported the former U.S. House speaker since the mid-'90s, when she was a lobbyist in Albany, N.Y., for the Christian Coalition.

"I like (Gingrich's) politics," Mulligan said. "I also like (Rick) Santorum, but I think (Gingrich) has a much better chance of beating Obama."

Juhl also feels that Gingrich has the best chance of beating the president. He and Mulligan also agree that the upcoming presidential election presents a stark contrast in choices.

"(The presidential election) will determine whether we have a free, democratic society in this country or go socialist," Mulligan said.
