Swan Song for Suwanee City Council Member

McOmber gets tributes during his final meeting.

Another changing of the guard in Suwanee began Tuesday, as outgoing City Council member Kevin McOmber participated in his final meeting. And he came in for some tributes from his peers and city staff members.

McOmber has been on the Suwanee council since 2007, and gained a reputation as a quiet and efficient leader. And the tributes Tuesday bore that out.

Among the statements of tribute:

  • "A big collective sigh of disappointment" over McOmber's departure, said Jessica Roth of the city manager's office;
  • "You don't talk down to us, you talk to us," said Police Chief Mike Jones;
  • "We now have our overlay," said Sugar Hill Council Member Steve Edwards. "Thank you for what you've done."
McOmber, an engineer by trade, helped in the design of Town Center Park, which opened in 2003. More recently, he made what amounted to a compromise motion to approve a 55-home subdivision in the Moore Road area. The land that the subdivision is to be built on was the subject of a controversial lawsuit, and the new developers had a legal team make their proposal to City Council in July.

McOmber will be succeeded in January by Linnea Miller, formerly a member of the city's Public Arts Commission. Miller will become the fourth new council member since 2010.

"I'm not someone who enjoys the spotlight, but this is fun," McOmber said of the sendoff. "I appreciate the friendship -- stay in touch."
