What's Cooking for Gwinnett Seniors

Suwanee restaurant helps county meals program.

There are a lot of cutbacks going on in Gwinnett County government these days, but one thing that is still on the table: food for senior citizens.

A county agency and the Outback Steakhouse in Suwanee again teamed up this week on a program that brings in funds to pay for meals for seniors.

The restaurant's manager and crew, many on their day off, came in Wednesday and helped prepare over 400 meals that were delivered later that day to various businesses in Gwinnett. The funds from those lunches were to go toward Friends of Gwinnett County Senior Services, a non-profit that financially aids core programs for Gwinnett Senior Services.

This is the 12th straight year that Outback has donated food and labor for the program; it has generated over $100,000. The money will help to subsidize the 135,000 home-delivered and congregate meals that are prepared annually by the county's Senior Services.Β About 140 seniors are on a waiting list to receive home delivered meals.

Wednesday's meals cost $15 and consisted of grilled sirloin, grilled shrimp, seasoned green beans, and fries.

Outback Steakhouse Manager Crystal Waters said, "Outback gives back to the community because it is the core of our principles and beliefs. We do many things low key, not to be in the limelight, but simply to give back to the community."

About 30 businesses were on Wednesday's route sheet, including NCR, Cisco Systems and Mitsubishi, as well as the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center.
