Almost Back to Homeschool Time in Suwanee

As school is about to start, there are many options available to choose from.

Updated July 31, 2011

Summer is almost over in and school is just around the corner. While Suwanee is home to great schools, there are families that choose alternatives to the public school system. In Gwinnett County, including Suwanee, there are several options available. One option that is becoming increasingly popular is the option to homeschool.

For those that are interested in homeschooling, Gwinnett County has very specific requirements. The beginning of each school year, a Declaration of Intent needs to be filed with the school system. Each month thereafter, an attendance calendar needs to be filed as well. A school year must have a documented 180 days that are 4.5 hours in length. More information can be found at the Georgia Department of Education. Proper forms can be found at the Gwinnett Public School System website.

Curriculum is the next thing that homeschoolers need to decide upon. A good starting point is the Southeast Homeschool Expo, which will be held July 29-30 at the Cobb Galleria. Exhibitors include companies that provide curriculum, schools that offer courses to homeschoolers, teaching aids, and more. It is a good way to see all that is available for home-schoolers in the area, including resources for those that are new to home-schooling.
