New Suwanee School Coming, Thanks to E-SPLOST

Also, North Gwinnett High will get an expansion.

Two Suwanee school clusters stand to benefit in 2014 from the E-SPLOST program approved by voters last November.

A new middle school in Suwanee for the Peachtree Ridge cluster and an addition to are in design, according to a Gwinnett school system report.

The new middle school would house 1,000 students and have 40 classrooms, according to the report. The addition to North Gwinnett would boost that school's capacity to 2,600 students from 2,350.

The middle school location will be 1221 Northbrook Parkway in Suwanee, according to Jorge Quintana, spokesperson for the GCPS. The name will be selected through a process that involves suggestions from parents and community members, and will be held closer to the 2014 opening.

For 2016, an addition to North Gwinnett Middle School is planned that would boost its capacity to 2,175 students from 1,800. In 2017, Peachtree Ridge High expects to get an addition that would boost its capacity to 3,200 from 2,800.

Overcrowding at Peachtree Ridge High prompted the GCPS to realign attendance zones for the Peachtree Ridge and Duluth clusters for the current school year.

Overall, the E-SPLOST is expected to generate $876 million for Gwinnett schools from 2012-17.
