Peachtree Ridge Educator a GCPS Teacher of Year Finalist

Six teachers are in the running. The award will be given on Nov. 1.

Dean Landers, a teacher at Peachtree Ridge High in Suwanee, is among the finalists for 2013 Teacher of the Year for Gwinnett County schools.

Landers and five other Gwinnett educators have made it to the final round of competition. The winner will be named Thursday, Nov. 1, at ceremonies (6:30 p.m.) at the Gwinnett Center, according to a GCPS news release.

Landers teaches physics to juniors and seniors at Peachtree Ridge.

The other finalists are Erica Leach, Walnut Grove Elementary; Deborah Johnson, Berkmar Middle; Celisa Edwards, Dacula Middle; Heidi Mikulecky of Richards Middle; and Jay Nebel of Norcross High.

According to a GCPS news release, Landers was a mechanical engineering student in college. However, his ambition changed during a semester abroad when he taught English to students in Spain.

“… The passion for teaching began to blossom,” Landers said. “Not only was it fun, but I was good at it.”

The finalists were selected in a process that began with 131 local school candidates.
