Registration Extended for GCPS’s New Online Campus

Gwinnett County Public Schools announced Friday (June 17) that it has extended the registration period for the new online campus, which will open its virtual classes for the first time in August.

Additional registration will take place from June 20 to July 14 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Students must register in person at the campus at 2595 Beaver Ruin Road in Norcross.

The new full-time charter school will allow students in grades 9 to 12 to learn in a more flexible environment.  The school will offer courses and curriculum similar to that found in traditional high schools, according to a GCPS release. Students will be expected to participate in discussions, meet deadlines and complete homework. Assessment will be similar to that of traditional high school students as well. 

While the content will be similar to other Gwinnett high schools, GCPS anticipates that the way the students learn will differ in many ways. 

All learning will occur online, so students will need to have a computer and a reliable internet connection to enroll in the school. GCPS says that communication among students and teachers will take place by phone, via email, on discussion boards and in virtual classrooms.

The online campus will be organized by mini-semester, with three classes taken in four mini-semester blocks that begin in August, October, January and March. Students are expected to earn six credits per mini-semester and may take additional classes for a fee, according to GCPS, allowing them to graduate early.  

Students must live within the system’s attendance zone, but they do not need to be previously enrolled in Gwinnett County schools. Students who have completed grades 8 through 11 are eligible to attend; they do not need to start the online campus in 9th grade.
