Suwanee Council To Meet on North Gwinnett High Annexation

The move could go before the Georgia General Assembly.

The Suwanee City Council has called a special meeting for Thursday (Jan. 16) to deal with the possibility of annexing North Gwinnett High School.

According to the agenda, the called meeting is to "Consider Adopting a Resolution Authorizing and Requesting the Annexation of the North Gwinnett High School Campus into the Corporate Limits of Suwanee."

Discussions about puling the high school into the city limits advanced recently. State Rep. Brooks Coleman, whose district includes Suwanee, said he plans to introduce legislation that would allow this to happen.

State legislative action is necessary because the North Gwinnett High property is contiguous with other unincorporated land, Coleman said.

The movement to annex the school property began in 2012. Members of the school council and PTA sent a letter to Suwanee officials requesting the move.

The called council meeting Thursday is in advance of a regularly scheduled workshop, at which no official business is to be taken.
