An NFL Player Makes the Cut in Suwanee

Chiefs defender Daniels and brother partner in a unique barber shop.

During this NFL offseason, it's all about locks and lockouts for Travis Daniels.

The Kansas City Chiefs defensive back and former LSU star has partnered with brother Sheppard in a unique new barber shop in Suwanee, Kutz Remix. Daniels took a break last week from his studies at LSU in Baton Rouge to check on the business, which opened in May on Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road.

The, uh, spin to this business is that customers get music from a live DJ on weekends while waiting in the lobby or being trimmed. On a recent Saturday, DJ Promo cranked things up in the afternoon with "Hello" by Shawty Lo.

"We are both into music," Travis Daniels said of his brother, who recently moved to Suwanee from Conyers. "We didn't want (football) jerseys (in the shop). ... It has a European feel."

Instead of football paraphernalia on the wall, there are vinyl discs bearing the autographs of such Atlanta Falcons players as Curtis Lofton.

Travis Daniels said the DJ will spin a variety of tunes, including by such artists as Justin Timberlake and Lenny Kravitz. He also sees such shops opening in other cities, and says he has had interest.

But finishing his bachelor's degree and the current NFL lockout, which is a threat to the coming season, are also strong on Daniels' mind.

"It's different," Travis Daniels said of the impasse that has prevented organized workouts at NFL facilities. "I'm used to working out in minicamps (at this time of year)."

Of course, he stays in touch with other NFL players and their leadership in the collective bargaining talks. He feels there is movement and that a settlement is possible "soon."

Travis Daniels now stays in shape by working out with the LSU team while finishing his bachelor's degree in Baton Rouge. Depending on the status of the NFL lockout, he could participate in graduation ceremonies this year or next spring.

A South Florida native, Travis Daniels played for Nick Saban both at LSU and with the Miami Dolphins. He said he saw no change in the coach in the NFL.

"He's a competitor; he's going to try to get the best side of you," Travis Daniels said of the man nicknamed "Nick Satan" because of his intense demeanor.

So if Travis Daniels decides to pursue coaching when his playing days end, he will have plenty of contacts to help. He rubbed elbows with current head coaches Jimbo Fisher (Florida State), Will Muschamp (Florida) and Derek Dooley (Tennessee) during his career at LSU, which included the 2003 national championship.

"It's because of Saban," Travis Daniels said, smiling.
