Buford Title Streak Ends vs. Calhoun

Yellow Jackets come away with Class AA title in the Georgia Dome.

It had been a long time since Buford had lost a state title game, and the Wolves were expected to win again Friday. But Calhoun had other plans.

The Yellow Jackets got a field goal from Adam Griffith in overtime for a 27-24 victory over Buford in the Georgia Dome, according to news reports.

It was Calhoun's first state title since 1952, and ended a four-year title run for Buford.

The Wolves rallied to tie the game in regulation when Dillon Lee returned a fumbled punt for a score. In overtime, Buford got the ball first, but running back Andre Johnson fumbled and Calhoun recovered.

That led to the winning field goal and Calhoun ending a three-year losing stread to Buford in the title game.

"Our kids had a lot of confidence," Buford head coach Jess Simpson told the Gwinnett Daily Post. "That's what makes it harder. We haven't had a loss like this in a game like this in a while. It makes it a tough big pill to swallow."
