kicked off their inaugural season of varsity sports in a big way Saturday. Both their men's and women's soccer team were victorious in their games on their newly constructed field in front of some 700 fans.
The women's team played the first game in the school's history against Tennessee Temple University Saturday. Sophomore forward Amairani Almanza of Lilburn scored the first two goals for the Grizzlies. They went on to beat TTU 9-1.
“It was a fantastic start out there by our team today,” said head women’s coach Domenic Martelli in a release. “We were so excited to see everything come together for the first time and we had a fantastic crowd out there. That gave us great energy to play really well, from the backs all the way up to the forward spot.”
The men's team went on to defeat TTU 12-0 in the second game of the doubleheader. Junior Andres Molano from Columbia scored the first goal in the men's team history just over eight minutes into the game. Senior forward Tom Butler of England scored five goals for the Grizzlies.
"I got great service from my teammates, that was the key today, and I managed to finish them,” said Butler. “That’s why we’ve been working so hard in practice and I feel that, in games, if I get good service, I’ll score goals.”
“The energy and excitement of what we saw for a first day was unbelievable,” said head men’s coach Steve DeCou in a release. “Just to see all the hard work of everything we’ve done come together, it was fun to finally kick a ball and play. I thought we had some great midfield play that really opened things up for us up front."
