Atlanta Sports Council a factor in the 2012 women's gymnastics tournament.

The Atlanta group that is helping Gwinnett tourism officials with trying to land the Atlantic Coast Conference baseball tournament also helped it secure the NCAA women's gymnastics event in April 2012.

Gwinnett Convention and Visitors Bureau officials are praising the efforts of the Atlanta Sports Council in helping obtain the NCAA event for the Gwinnett Arena in Duluth on April 20-22, 2012. Georgia Tech will be the host school.

As reported by Suwanee Patch, Gwinnett tourism officials and Atlanta Sports Council officials recently visited the ACC baseball tournament to show interest in bringing that event to Coolray Field in Lawrenceville.

The partnership underscores how the ASC is approaching event recruitment with a new and expanded direction, according to Dan Corso, executive director of the Atlanta Sports Council.

“The Gwinnett Center is a tremendous facility that has proven it is capable of hosting a myriad of big events across several sporting platforms,” Corso said in a media release.  "We’ll use this event as a springboard to identify new and unique ways to work with Gwinnett County and its venues as we look to bring more sports events to the region.”

“We look forward to partnering with the Atlanta Sports Council staff to develop new events for Gwinnett County, and work together to market and promote our upcoming events,” added Preston Williams, CEO of the Gwinnett Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Gwinnett Arena, in a news release.

The Gwinnett Arena hosted the 2009 NCAA women's basketball championships. Currently, Alabama and Georgia are ranked in the top five nationally in women's gymnastics.
