Lingerie Football League May Change Name, Uniforms (With Video)

The 're-branding' comes as it prepares to expand into Gwinnett in 2013, as well as other areas.

That women-only football league that plans to play in Gwinnett in 2013 has announced a coming "re-branding" that likely will include changes to its name and uniforms.

According to a news release, the Lingerie Football League will announce facets of the re-branding on Wednesday (January 9) in Los Angeles as it gears up for its fourth season in the U.S.

"We have now reached a crossroad of gaining credibilty as a sport or continuing to be viewed as a gimmick," the press release said in part. "In the coming years we will establish this sport in Canada, US, Australia, Europe and Asia as the most known form of American football globally. In order to reach the next milestone, we feel the focus has to be the sport and our amazing athletes."

The release also said the makeover "could include as much as a name change, uniform and game equipment modification."

The Atlanta franchise, named the Steam, will debut in the Gwinnett Arena on Saturday, April 13, vs. Omaha. Tickets are $15-75, according to the information on the Gwinnett Arena events calendar. A second Steam game is scheduled for Saturday, May 18, vs. Cleveland.

In the LFL, football is seven-on-seven, with no kickoffs, punting or field goals. The women wear helmets and shoulder pads, in addition to the current lingerie-type uniforms, and engage in full contact during scrimmage plays.

Also noted from the Gwinnett Arena events calendar: No video or audio taping of Atlanta Steam games is allowed.
