Suwanee High School Sports Recap

Burnette's record-setting performance helps lead Peachtree Ridge to Gwinnett championship in track and field.

Junior Autumn Burnett's track career at Peachtree Ridge got off to a rocky start when she suffered an injury her freshman year. But she worked hard to make a comeback, and it paid off last week when she broke her own school records in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles to help lead to the county championship in track and field.

The Lions scored 120 points to finish ahead of runner-up , which scored 103.5. scored 38 points to finish sixth.

Burnett recorded a 44.32 in the 300-hurdles to finish more than 2.5 seconds ahead of runner-up Claire Cashin of . Burnett's wins coupled with Sonikqua Walters’ victory in the 400, helped propel Coach Venson Elder's Lions to the Gwinnett County championship.

SOCCER

Peachtree Ridge boys pulled off a mild upset Tuesday, edging 2-1 while the Lady Lions suffered two setbacks, losing 4-0 to Mill Creek on Tuesday and 2-1 to North Gwinnett on Thursday. Andres Rodriguez and Chris Cook scored goals for the Lions (10-2, 2-2) and keeper Mitch Kupstas saved seven shots. Mill Creek's girls (10-1, 3-0) were led by Lauren Tanner's two goals and Courtney Dobeck and Tatum O'Keefe each added one. Keeper Tessa Lukens contributed three saves in goal.

TENNIS

The Lions had better luck against Mill Creek's tennis teams, sweeping both matches. Brock Beisel, Alex Makarenko and David Wang swept the singles matches for the boys (6-2, 5-1) and Chandler Burchfield and Chris Copeland won at No. 2 doubles. Meanwhile, the Lady Lions (9-0, 6-0) remained unbeaten, rolling to a 4-1 victory. Mary Jeremiah, Jena Kelly and Jessica Northcutt earned singles wins and Ali Mills and Abby Owens took a win at No. 1 doubles.

LACROSSE

Cory Hall scored five goals Tuesday as Peachtree Ridge continued to dominate its opponents in boys lacrosse, beating Mill Creek 13-2. The win lifts the Lions to 7-1 on the season. Michael Ruffcorn contributed three goals and a pair of assists. Tyler Botts added two goals. But the Mill Creek girls were too much for the Lady Lions, winning 10-5. Kelly Skoglund had five goals and an assist to pace Mill Creek (9-2, 3-0).


NORTH GWINNETT

BASEBALL

Beau Blair was a one-man wrecking crew in Mountain View's 11-1 win over North Gwinnett on Tuesday. Blair was not only masterful on the mound, hurling a complete game two-hitter, but he was deadly at the plate, delivering a three-run homer and five RBI. Ryan Hagan and sophomore Zane Stringer had North's only two hits.

SOCCER

It was a very successful week for the Lady Bulldogs. On Tuesday, Taylor Burns scored two goals and Caroline Gualdoni added a goal and an assist as No. 9 North Gwinnett blanked Norcross 4-0. On Thursday, North (10-3, 3-1) defeated rival Peachtree Ridge 2-1 in a critical 7-AAAAA showdown. Abbi Edwards got the game winner at the 71-minute mark. Gualdoni scored North's other goal in the seventh minute. Phoebe Palmer scored the only goal for Peachtree Ridge (7-6, 3-2) off a feed by Emily Edmond.

TENNIS

Taylor Buchholz won his No. 1 singles match, R.I. Clement won at No. 3 singles and Ryan Duncan and Mark Hardy posted doubles wins Tuesday to lead North Gwinnett to a 3-2 win over Collins Hill. The Eagles Tyler Kallgren won at No. 2 singles and Marcus Maloney and Peyton Rushing were the winners in No. 2 doubles.

LACROSSE

North Gwinnett picked up its third win of the season with a convincing 17-1 win over Parkview on Tuesday. Adam Printz turned in a dominant performance, scoring seven goals and assisting on two more as the Bulldogs improved to 3-5 for the season. Matt Palmer chipped in with three goals and James Shimkus added two.

COLLINS HILL

The Lady Lions dropped a 4-1 decision to unbeaten Mill Creek on Monday. Kristy Yau won at No. 1 singles and Mallory Kolts won at No. 3 singles for the Hawks (15-1, 5-0). Jillian Estes was the only winner for Collins Hill at No. 2 singles. But the Eagles boys turned the tables, beating Mill Creek by an identical 4-1 score to remain unbeaten in 7-AAAAA play. The Eagles (12-2, 5-0) were sparked by the No. 1 doubles team of Alec Rahmanian and Jake Inderrieden and the No. 2 team of Marcus Maloney and Peyton Rushing. Chris Clark and Tyler Kallgren earned wins in No. 1 and No. 2 singles respectively.

TRACK

Collins Hill senior Sydney Williams won the county championship in the girls 800-meters at the county track meet last week. She turned in a time of 2:20.58 to finish ahead of Brookwood’s QuanDra Shanks and teammate Vicky Winslow.


SOCCER

The Eagles also swept a pair of soccer matches on Tuesday, beating Mountain View 3-1 in the boys match and 3-0 in the girls match. Sarah Heck scored two goals to lead the Lady Eagles (8-4, 3-1). Taylor Donohue had a goal and Lindsay Leonardo and Paige Hoover each had an assist for the Eagles.

GOLF

defeated Collins Hill 144 to 174 behind a sizzling 3-under par 32 by Zach Healy. Blue Devils teammate Josh Klipstein was 1-under at 34.

LACROSSE

Newnan routed the Eagles 9-3 on Tuesday. Holin Axley, Aaron Smithson and Ryan Flores scored a goal each for Collins Hill (5-3) and keeper Alex Squires had 17 saves.
