Suwanee High School Sports Recap

Peachtree Ridge's Jared Walsh is named baseball Player of the Year and Collins Hill's Dominic Bonilla is named boys soccer Player of the Year.

It's that time of year to choose the area's top high school athletes from the spring sports and, once again, the schools in Suwanee Patch area have demonstrated their excellence.

BASEBALL

Region 7-AAAAA baseball coaches voted for Peachtree Ridge’s Jared Walsh Player of the Year and Mill Creek’s Brian Stillwell Pitcher of the Year. Duluth Coach Matt Champitto and Mill Creek's Doug Jones shared Coach of the Year honors.

All-region pitchers included Trey Marksberry of Collins Hill and Mill Creek's Chip Fleming.

All-region position players included Peachtree Ridge’s Billy Best, North Gwinnett's Seth Bancroft, Alex Kimble and Connor Jenkins, Collins Hill's Brandon Keen, Duluth's Evan Dumas, Mountain View’s Alex Brock, Norcross’ Tanner Maloof and William Paschal, Mill Creek’s Connor Kasten, Devin Bonin, Chandler Boyd and Jerad Curry.

SOCCER

At the Gwinnett County Goal Club's All-County banquet Friday night, Class AAAAA boys Player of the Year honor went to Collins Hill's Dominic Bonilla while Brookwood’s Washida Blackman was named girls Player of the Year.

Collins Hill's Jeff Tinkelpaugh and Berkmar's Tracy Courch were named Coach of the Year in AAAAA. Boys All-County honors went to Bonilla, Emmanuel Raji and Zak Wallingford of Collins Hill, Roberto Hinojosa of North Gwinnett and Jeremy Rector of Peachtree Ridge. Girls All-County honors were presented to Blackman, Leah Brooke Beasley and Lindsay Leonardo of Collins Hill, North Gwinnett's Abby Groth and Baillie Burmaster of Peachtree Ridge.

BASKETBALL

Clayton Williams, an All-Region 7-AAAAA player who started at point guard for North Gwinnett for three years, has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Francis Marion University in South Carolina.

FOOTBALL

Area high school football fans will have an opportunity to look at some of the prep talent from outside the state of Georgia next year when North Gwinnett hosts East St. Louis in the nightcap of a football doubleheader on Aug. 27. The first game will feature Grayson going against Edgewater High School from Orlando, Fla.

LACROSSE

Gwinnett County boys and girls lacrosse coaches hosted the inaugural all-county banquet at Parkview High School on Saturday.The boys first team honorees included Most Valuable Player Cory Hall of Peachtree Ridge and his teammates Tyler Botts, Gary Heusel, Michael Ruffcorn, Tanner Botts, David Bayles and Greg Rose. Also named to the first team was Alex Squires of Collins Hill and his teammate Greg Rose, North Gwinnett's Adam Printz.

Named to the second team were Connor Boston and Aubrey Johnson of Collins Hill and Austin Crowe of Peachtree Ridge.

Honorable mention players included Holin Axley and Zack Kennedy of Collins Hil and Aaron Amin and Dan Constant of North Gwinnett. For the girls, Michelle Fortier of Peachtree Ridge was named Most Valuable Attacker. Her teammate Rachel Harper was named Most Valuable Defender and Collins Hill's Eryn Bonds was chosen as Most Valuable Goalie.

Other first team selections included Danielle Vincent, Kelsey Dedels, Tess Collins of Collins Hill.

Named to the second team were Darsey Walker, Collins Hill, Lauren Beck, Sally Crocker and Erin Palanza of Peachtree Ridge.

Honorable mention among the girls included Amanda Sanders, Alex Crawford and Emily Yoder of Peachtree Ridge and Lauren Amisano and Madison Tyndall of Collins Hill.

TRACK AND FIELD

Several outstanding track and field athletes from Collins Hill High School signed grant-in-aid scholarships last week. The group includes Andy Gonzalez (Harvard), Vicky Winslow (Kennesaw State), Sydney Williams (Kennesaw State), Michael McLaughlin (Franciscan University-Ohio), Chelsey Johnson (Jacksonville State-Ala.) and Carmen Garcia (Wingate).
