Suwanee Officials Have Hoop Dreams ... for A Day

Mayor, mayor pro tem to participate in a charity basketball game at North Gwinnett High.

If you want to check Suwanee Mayor Dave Williams' jump shot, and see how well Mayor Pro Tem Jace Brooks is on a fast break, come to North Gwinnett High later this month.

Seems the top two people in city government will be part of a benefit basketball game also involving the Harlem Legends touring team. The event, promoted by Roberts Elementary PTA, will be Feb. 26, 6 p.m., at .

The Harlem Legends' opposition also will include several people from Suwanee schools and businesses. Among them are Dr. Dion Jones of Roberts Elementary and Landen Prather, a manager at the Chick-fil-A restaurant at Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and Moore Road.

Williams may not have to knock off much rust. He said he plays from time to time at churches near Suwanee, and he referees some scrimmages involving his son's fifth-grade team.

Of course, he's enthused about the charity motive for the event. "It's an opportunity to raise money," he said. "Anytime I can get people pulling in the same direction to help the community, it's outstanding."

The Harlem Legends are led by former Harlem Globetrotters player Michael Douglas. The group of former pro athletes specializes in fund-raising events for non-profits. (The attached flyer describes the event at North Gwinnett this month.)

The Harlem Globetrotters themselves will be at the Gwinnett Arena in March.
