Does My Dog Need Clothing to Stay Warm?

Have you ever wondered about the necessity of canine clothing?

With the colder weather of the holidays in the Lilburn area, many dog owners may be wondering if their canine companion needs a coat or sweater to stay warm this season.  People have many different opinions when it comes to clothing and dogs.  Some see it as silly and unnecessary.  After all, dogs have been without clothing for thousands of years and have been fine.  Others see it as a necessity for their short-coated pooch when the mercury falls below a certain point. To others it is a chance to make a fashion statement and will not hesitate to purchase a full wardrobe of clothing for their beloved dog.

In actuality, whether or not your dog needs a little extra warmth this winter depends on his age, breed, size, and coat type.  For example, many short-coated breeds and toy breeds will refuse to go outside in certain temperatures because it is too cold for them.  If forced to go outside without a sweater or coat, they will frequently shiver and attempt to go back inside as quickly as possible.  These breeds may include Chihuahuas, Manchester Terriers, Yorkshire Terriers, Shih-Tzus, and Greyhounds.  Other breeds of dogs are actually very well equipped naturally to deal with the colder temperatures and may actually overheat if given a coat to wear.  These breeds may include the Chow Chow, German Shepherd, Siberian Husky, and Saint Bernard.

Of course, use some common sense also.  If your 95 pound German Shepherd is shivering while outside for a potty break, do him a favor and get him a coat.  However, if your Jack Russell Terrier seems content in the colder weather, there is probably no need for him to wear clothing.

Will your dog be getting a sweater this holiday season?
