Suwanee School Leads Fund-Raising for Gwinnett Relay for Life

The 2013 event is May 10-11 in Lawrenceville.

The 2013 version of the Gwinnett Relay for Life is near, and a Suwanee school is coming up big in fund-raising. North Gwinnett High is a runaway leader in monies raised, with about $72,000 pledged so far (as of midday May 7), according to the Gwinnett Relay website. Among participating teams, Norcross High is second, at $38,300. Relay for Life, which is a function of the American Cancer Society, will be held at the Gwinnett Fairgrounds in Lawrenceville on May 10-11, beginning at 7 p.m. It's an organized, overnight fund-raising walk to raise money for cancer patients. GCPS Raises Money for Relay for Life 2013

About 150 participated in the event on April 27 in Suwanee.

In its annual "I See a Cure" event, Gwinnett County Public Schools participants raised about $4,000 for cancer awareness and research, according to organizers. The event was held April 27 at the Gwinnett County Public Schools district offices in Suwanee. Some 150 people attended. Funds from the event are forwarded to Gwinnett Relay for Life, and go to support the American Cancer Society. "Despite a few sprinkles in the beginning, the race went very well and we all had a great time running/walking to support Relay for Life," said Patrice Pendergast, GCPS recruitment coordinator and an event committee member.  "We honored cancer survivors, those who are currently battling and those who have lost the battle," Pendergast added. Suwanee, Gwinnett Schools Ranked Among the Best in U.S.

Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology is ranked No. 3 in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.

If your children attend high school in Gwinnett County, they may attend one of the best schools in the nation. There are nine such high schools in Gwinnett County Public Schools, according to the recent rankings by U.S. News & World Report. They include Peachtree Ridge High in Suwanee. The data was released April 23. Former U.N. Ambassador to Speak at GGC Commencement

Andrew Young, also a former mayor of Atlanta, will address the class of 2013.

Former Atlanta mayor and Ambassador to the United Nations Andrew Young was chosen as Georgia Gwinnett College's commencement speaker for the May 17 ceremony. “Ambassador Young is one of our nation’s most inspiring leaders,” said GGC President Daniel Kaufman in a release. “His many public service roles give him a unique perspective on the issues and opportunities facing graduates entering today’s global economy. His life demonstrates what a dedicated citizen can do for his community, state and nation. GCPS Extends Registration for Online Campus for 2013-14

Gwinnett County parents interested in the online learning option for their students have until May 3 to register for the upcoming school year.

(From Gwinnett County Public Schools) Gwinnett County parents interested in the online learning option for their students have additional time this spring to register for the 2013-14 school year. A spring registration period for Gwinnett County Online Campus (GOC) began Monday, April 15, and closes on May 3. Gwinnett County's full-time, online learning option will expand next school year and serve students in grades 4-12. Because Gwinnett Online Campus is a system charter school, enrollment is open to all current school-aged children who reside in Gwinnett County. The school opened in 2011 as a full-time high school (Grades 9-12) and extended its reach in 2012 to offer middle school students (Grades 6-8) the opportunity to attend the …

Gwinnett Schools' Budget Slightly Smaller for 2013-14

Leaders met at Meadowcreek High, where they tentatively approved the $1.8 billion budget for next school year.

The Gwinnett County Board of Education "tentatively" adopted a $1.8 billion budget for the 2013-14 school year during a special called meeting Tuesday. Board member Louise Radloff made the motion to adopt the superintendent's recommended budget, which totals $1.76 billion. Board members then voted unanimously to approve it. The budget is a decrease of $12.8 million, or 0.7 percent, over the current year. Among the budget highlights are: There will now be two public hearings before the final adoption. The first public hearing is 7 p.m., May 9; the second public hearing is 6 p.m., May 16. Both meetings take place at the district headquarters in Suwanee. Suwanee Hostage-Taker Dead After Gunfire Exchanged With SWAT Team

Gwinnett firefighters are rescued with superficial injuries after a standoff in the suburbs Wednesday.

The hostage-taker who was pronounced deceased Wednesday (April 10) in Suwanee after exchanging gunfire with Gwinnett SWAT officers apparently was motivated by financial concerns. Gwinnett Police spokesperson Ed Ritter said Wednesday evening that the person who originally held five Gwinnett firefighters hostage had requested that his power and other utilities be turned back on during negotations. The situation ended about 7:30 p.m. in a subdivision near Walnut Grove Elementary when police made the decision to go into the home at 2440 Walnut Grove Way. Spring Plant Sale in April at Gwinnett Tech

The annual event will have annuals, perennials, shrubs and more.

If you are looking for ways to spruce up your lawn or garden, Gwinnett Tech soon can help. The Lawrenceville school's horticulture program will hold its annual spring plant sale on April 16-18, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., at the school's greenhouse, according to a news release. The sale will offer: “I know every year we say the plant sale gets better, but the greenhouse is spectacular. The students have pulled together the best looking and the healthiest plants ever.  There are more varieties than we have time to list and I think our supporters will be pleased,” Aaron Poulsen, Horticulture program director, said in the news release. Spring Break for Gwinnett Students; CRCT Tests Coming Soon

Gwinnett County public school students officially have spring break April 8 - 12, but the CRCT is just around the corner.

Gwinnett County Public Schools will be on 2013 spring break beginning April 8, with students and teachers returning on April 15. But, don't let all that fun go to your children's heads. One week after returning from vacation, the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) are administered to Gwinnett County students. Those tests run April 22-26. Advanced Placement tests, as well as course final exams are not too far behind in May. And, you know what that means: Graduation is just around the corner. 2013 NCAA Final Four Gets a Gwinnett Musical Touch

Members of the Shiloh High School Marching Brigade from Snellville welcomed the Syracuse Orange to Atlanta ahead of their NCAA semifinal game.

The Syracuse University basketball team received a rousing welcome to Atlanta, thanks to the Shiloh High School Marching Brigade. The Snellville band lined the stairs and played music to welcome the Orange to the Peach State for the NCAA tournament. Syracuse is one of the Final Four teams to play at the Georgia Dome on Saturday. They face off against the Michigan Wolverines Saturday at 8:49 p.m., immediately following the game between Wichita State and Louisville.
