NCAA champion, WNBA champion and Olympic gold medalist. The honors keep on coming for Maya Moore, the former Suwanee high school basketball star. Moore and the rest of the U.S. Olympics women's basketball team Saturday (Aug. 11) captured the 2012 gold medal by defeating France, 86-50. It was the fifth straight gold for the U.S., with its last Olympics loss coming in 1992. What has been your favorite Olympics moment? Tell us in the comments below. Moore, who played at Collins Hill High, had six points and seven rebounds for the U.S. She also won an NCAA title with UConn and a WNBA title with the Minnesota Lynx. The Olympics end Sunday, Aug. 12. The U.S. leads the overall medal count with 102 entering Sunday.

Attention, fans of the 2012 Olympics: The United States leads the overall medal count as the sporting spectacle enters its final weekend. Also, the U.S. has a narrow lead in the gold-medal total. China is second in both categories. The London Games end Sunday, Aug. 12. The top medal winner is U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps, with four golds and six overall. Phelps now possesses 22 medals for his career. This includes 18 golds. Among the other U.S. medal winners are swimmer Missy Franklin, 17, with four golds and tennis star Serena Williams, with two golds. The U.S. women's basketball team, which got a scare in first-round play Saturday in the 2012 Olympics, will be back in action Monday (July 30). The women's dream team, led by former Collins Hill High standout Maya Moore, will take on Angola on Monday, 5:15 p.m. The U.S. women were in a fight with Croatia on Saturday before pulling away to an 81-56 victory. Angola already has lost, 72-50, to Turkey. In the medal count, the United States has three golds and 11 medals overall as Monday (July 30) began. Brookwood graduate Amanda Weir won the medal during the first full day of the Olympics.
Amanda Weir, along with the rest of her swim team -- Lia Neal, Natalie Coughlin and anchor Allison Schmitt -- won the Olympics bronze medal during the 400 meter freestyle Saturday (July 28). Weir, from Brookwood High in Gwinnett, and Schmitt both swam for the Georgia Bulldogs. They came in behind the Netherlands, while Australia won gold. They've put in innumerable hours of sweat, blood and tears to get where they are today. They are among the best of the best and are ready to prove their mettle. 529 athletes from 45 states will represent the United States at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. They are competing in events as diverse as athletics, fencing, rowing, soccer and basketball.
