A retired Air Force sergeant and flight attendant recalls events of September 11, 2001.

A Suwanee woman has a rare perspective of the September 11 terrorist attacks that changed America forever. She was aboard Air Force One with then-President George W. Bush when the attacks hit. Wanda Joell, then an Air Force Master Sergeant, told Fox 5 news (and reported through accentnorthga.com) that fighter jets were on either side of the president's jet as they learned of the magnitude of the attacks. -- What are your memories of September 11? Tell us in the comments below. "I felt like we were going to be OK, we were safe with our guardian angels," Joell said. While it would initially seem that the most appropriate location would be near the fire station and the police headquarters, I feel those locations would greatly limit public access. Crossing Buford Highway from the park can at times be a daunting task, and would discourage many from attempting to view the display up close. For that reason, I would suggest a location near City Hall, as that would…   more ›

Suwanee Ponders Future Site for 9/11 Artifact

City officials continue weighing options for its permanent display.

The prominent 9/11 artifact that had been displayed in front of Suwanee City Hall is now back in storage, and city officials are discussing possibilities for its permanent display. Called Remembrance, the 1,600-pound piece of steel is a remnant of the World Trade Center towers in New York that were destroyed in the terrorist attacks in 2001. It arrived in Suwanee in July and was put on display during the city's 9/11 ceremony in September. Eventually, a Request For Proposals likely will be issued for artists and/or architects to develop a permanent display structure. Suwanee Still Debating Site for 9/11 Artifact

'Remembrance' may go back into storage while plans are finalized.

Suwanee city officials still are discussing a permanent site for Remembrance, the city's 9/11 artifact, and the former piece of the destroyed World Trade Center towers may go back into storage for the winter. The 1,600-pound piece of steel has been on display in front of City Hall since a memorable ceremony on Sept. 10. However, officials have not settled on a permanent site, and they are concerned about effects of weather, such as rust, on the artifact. "We need to get it out of the elements," City Manager Marty Allen said. The piece had been stored in a hangar at JFK airport in New York since officials there sorted out wreckage after the attacks in 2001. It arrived in Suwanee in July after city officials coordinated shipping with the …

City Council also recognizes North Gwinnett Arts Association leader.

Suwanee's never-ending eye for art is yielding a new wrinkle: electronic audio for people touring SculpTour. City Council on Tuesday gave the OK for city staff to apply for a $3,500 grant from the Gwinnett Convention and Visitors Bureau; the money would be used to produce a digital tool for smartphones that could be used in conjunction with the city's walkable outdoor art exhibit. Denise Brinson, Suwanee's director of economic development, said the audio would be in the form of an app or podcast; it should be available in 30-45 days. In other action at Tuesday's council meeting:
