Gwinnett Gallery Offers Arts, Classes in Duluth

Artists Pam and Larry Smith relocated their business to Main Street in Duluth.

Gwinnett artists Pam and Larry Smith display their original paintings and works by other artists at the recently opened 2 Smith Gallery on Main Street in downtown Duluth. The 1,250-square-foot gallery, filled with northern light ideal for painting, also serves at the site for weekly art classes they teach. Larry paints landscapes in oils and acrylics and describes his style as impressionistic. Pam specializes in portraits of adults, children and dogs. ‘His style is real loose, mine is real tight,” she said. Both accept commissions. They paint mostly from photographs. “It’s a more efficient use of time,” Pam said. The Smiths met while attending Auburn University. SculpTour 2012 App Available on iTunes

A digital guided tour of the walkable outdoor display is available for smartphone use.

Again putting a digital touch on their well-known arts program, Suwanee city officials have developed an app for the SculpTour 2012 public art display. According to a city news release, City Hall is the starting point of the 2012 Suwanee SculpTour guided audio tour/podcast. It provides walking directions to and information about each of the 15 sculptures included in the exhibit, as well as insights from the 11 participating artists. As they did on the app for the SculpTour 2011, Annette Phelps, City Hall receptionist, and Council Member Dick Goodman (also chairman of the Public Arts Commission) lead the tour. Suwanee Public Arts Program Paying Off

Several SculpTour pieces have been sold to businesses or individuals.

The City Of Suwanee includes public art in its economic development strategy, and there are several recent instances that demonstrate that this is working. Several exhibits from the first two SculpTour displays have been purchased either by the city or by local businesses and individuals. -- What is your favorite SculpTour piece? Suwanee Park Hosting Art/Photo Exhibit

Two photographers' works are at Gwinnett's George Pierce Park through September.

An art exhibit that includes photographs of various Gwinnett County scenes is now on display at George Pierce Park in Suwanee. "Scenes From Gwinnett" by Hal Jones showcases photographs throughout the county, according to a Gwinnett County news release. Also, a second exhibit on display is entitled "Doors to the World," by Charles Rogers. Rogers’ photography reflects his travels. What is your favorite part about George Pierce Park? Suwanee Earns More Awards for Public Arts

Georgia Municipal Association and ArtWorks! Gwinnett commend the SculpTour program.

The City of Suwanee has won two awards recently for its popular SculpTour program Suwanee was one of six Georgia cities recognized as a Trendsetter by the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) and Georgia Trend magazine. Also, the City was awarded a Community Impact - Community Arts Program Award from ArtWorks! Gwinnett, according to a city news release. The Trendsetter Award was presented during GMA's annual Mayors' Day Conference in Atlanta. Suwanee was recognized for bringing together public art and the community in public spaces as part of its economic development efforts. This is Suwanee's fourth Trendsetter Award. Suwanee Academy of the Arts is located in the heart of Suwanee. Owners Bernie Davis and Patty Etherton wouldn't have it any other way. The academy is their heart-gift to the city and community, and the two entrepreneurs continue to give back to the community with their life work. The arts are in their soul; it's truly a work of passion for them. Etherton discovered her love of music as a child. She sang her first solo before an audience in middle school and went on to major in music education in college. Davis discovered dance with childhood dreams to be a ballerina. Her parents enrolled her in dance classes as a child and she's been dancing ever since. She double majored in performance and education in college and began teaching dance …

Park in Suwanee Showing Gwinnett Artist's Work

Updated Aug. 2, 2011 The retrospective of a 35-year art career by a Sugar Hill resident went on display Monday, Aug. 1, at George Pierce Park in Suwanee, the county said in a news release. Chris Hamman, a member of the North Gwinnett Arts Association, began paining in the 1970s in the Midwest.  He later studied with Ernie Haring, a well-known regional water colorist, and started painting using watercolors. After getting married and moving to the West Coast, he began to work with oils, acrylics and other mediums. He has lived in the Atlanta area since 2004. The exhibit will be open to the public to Nov. 29, Mon. through Thurs. 9 a.m. to  8 p.m., Fri. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sat. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The exhibit will be in the Community Recreation…

Artists Paint The Town in Suwanee

Arts In The Park event draws many varieties.

Arts is as diversified an occupation or category as sports or business. And that diversity was evident Saturday at Town Center Park in Suwanee. There was Anita Stewart of Suwanee, who has been painting for 30 years or so. She was one of several artists participating in Arts In The Park. "I like to travel and paint," Stewart said at her booth  Saturday. Her painting "Bougainvillea," done in South Africa, was on display along with works done in Panama and Italy. Stewart's studio is in Buford. Katherine Smith, a Central Gwinnett arts teacher who lives in Decatur, was busy squeezing and tossing ceramic clay to make a sculpture. A good arts teacher knows that ceramic clay comes out of the earth, as opposed to polymer clay, which is man made. …
