SPEAK OUT: Will Atlanta Braves Win the World Series in 2012?

Atlanta clinches a playoff spot Tuesday in dramatic style. Share your thoughts.

What a difference a year makes. The Atlanta Braves are in the 2012 baseball playoffs. A year ago, the Braves endured one of the biggest collapses in baseball history, blowing an 8 1/2 game lead in September to miss the playoffs. But not so in 2012. The Braves defeated Miami, 4-3, Tuesday on a walk-off homer by former Gwinnett Braves player Freddie Freeman to clinch a playoff spot. At this point, Atlanta has clinched a spot in a possible wild-card playoff spot. And they still have a chance at the NL East title, as they trail Washington by four games. The 2012 playoff appearance also is special, in that it marks the final postseason appearance for team icon Chipper Jones, who is retiring. Jones is the only remaining player from Atlanta's …

Well ... remember that Arizona won the 2001 World Series with essentially two hot starting pitchers, Johnson and Schilling. In a 5- or 7-game series, you really only need two starting pitchers to do well at the same time.   more ›

Gonzalez and Cox After the Game in Gwinnett

In a video you'll only see on Patch, current Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez and former manager Bobby Cox said they both enjoyed playing in this matchup between the Braves All-Stars and Future All-Stars at Coolray Field.

Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez got a look at the future. And Gwinnett baseball fans got a chance to watch their major league favorites play in their own backyard.  A record setting crowd of 10,568 came to Coolray Field on Tuesday night to watch the Atlanta Braves take on the Future All-Stars -- a team made up of the best talent from the major league team's farm clubs. And the future looks bright for many of the up and coming players. "They've got some good young position players there and some of those arms that came out of the bullpen, it was pretty impressive to see," said Gonzalez. "If I ever get fired, I'm gonna go out there and manage the Lynchburg Hillcats this year," he joked. "It's a pretty good club they've got out there…

Atlanta Braves Get Rain-Shortened Win at Coolray

Record Coolray Field crowd of 10,568 sees parent club survive Future Stars, 4-3. Rain halts play in seventh.

Updated April 4 "We're not pretty," Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said of his team before Tuesday's exhibition game at Coolray Field. "We're like hyenas -- they hunt in packs." Not pretty would describe Atlanta's 4-3 victory Tuesday. The parent club, which opens its season Thursday in New York, had to come from behind to lead the Future Stars team of minor leaguers. Then the rain that had been falling intensified in the seventh, forcing play to be called. A record Coolray Field crowd of 10,568 watched the game, which included legendary former Manager Bobby Cox leading the Future Stars. A double by All Star Brian McCann, a Duluth High grad, scored pinch-runner Luis Durango to put Atlanta ahead 4-3 in the fifth. McCann struck out in …

One of the fun things about this game is that Bobby Cox, the former Atlanta Braves manager who retired after the 2010 season, will manage the Futures team of Braves minor-leaguers. POLL: New Atlanta Braves Uniforms; Share Your Thoughts

As the team prepares to open spring training Monday, they will have something of a new look.

Atlanta's boys of summer are back, as Braves pitchers and catchers report to spring training Monday (Feb. 20). But the Atlanta Braves will have a new look for some games in 2012. The team plans to wear cream-colored uniforms for weekend home games this season. The look is reminiscent of those worn by the Braves during their first two seasons in Atlanta (1966-67). There are four other uniform designs for the Braves. Atlanta missed the playoffs last year after a September collapse that saw them blow an 8 1/2 game lead as of Sept. 6. The team that beat them out of a wild-card spot, St. Louis, went on to win the World Series. Also, there's the continuing saga of veteran Chipper Jones, who will be back this season but always is a threat to miss…
