TSPLOST Failure Affects Suwanee Project

A portion of the Buford Highway redevelopment was on the TSPLOST project list.

The failure of the transportation sales tax also known as TSPLOST this week will have an effect on a Suwanee project. Suwanee officials already had announced plans to redevelop a portion of Buford Highway near the city's center. However, an additional stretch of the thoroughfare was on the TSPLOST project list, and so will not happen. City Manager Marty Allen noted Wednesday that funding was included in TSPLOST to allow for Buford Highway reconstruction between McGinnis Ferry Road and George Pierce Park. Suwanee To Begin Buford Highway Project

The remodeling, aided in part by a $3.3 million grant, is expected to begin construction in 2013.

Armed with a $3.3 million grant from the Atlanta Regional Commission, the City Of Suwanee is about to begin a major revamp of Buford Highway near the city's center. The process will begin with a study starting in February. Construction should begin in 2013 and take two years to complete. “We’re not rebuilding the entire roadway…

Duluth May Annex Land Near Suwanee

City would like to annex Gwinnett Place Mall, Cardinal Lake Estates, commercial property along Buford Highway, and remaining parts of Blue Ridge Industrial Park.

The City of Duluth has some ambitious plans to annex land next to the city limits. At the City Council’s direction, staff has identified about 13 potential areas for annexation, including some near Suwanee, according to Duluth Planning Director Glenn Coyne. The areas being eyed for annexation include residential, commercial and industrial properties. The city hopes to convince residents and business owners in these areas of the advantages of becoming a part of Duluth, he said. City staff will recommend annexation priorities for the City Council to discuss at its Aug. 22 work session, Coyne said. The report will include an analysis of the tax revenue that the properties would generate balanced against their need for city services. “We’re …

Senior Citizens Find A Home at Suwanee Park

George Pierce Park has many programs for the older set.

From the moment you walk into the George Pierce Park Community Center, you instantly feel welcome and comfortable. And that feeling is one many seniors in and around Suwanee feel when they enjoy the various programs offered. The park's community center is a beautiful facility, complete with lecture rooms, computer labs, Bridge tables, and cozy reading areas. During a visit, two Bridge games, a computer class, and even an AARP tax-assistance class were going on simultaneously. In addition to the events and classes, senior trips and clubs are available. Senior citizens in Suwanee and across Gwinnett County have a safe place in county-operated parks to go to meet friends, experience life, and enjoy their community.  The Gwinnett County senior…
