Collins Hill Loses in AAAAAA Soccer Final

Berkmar dethrones the defending champion Eagles in an all-Gwinnett final.

Berkmar High of Lilburn has ended the reign of Collins Hill's boys soccer team as large-school state champion. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Kofi Twumasi and Awey Houry scored second-half goals Saturday, leading the Patriots to a 2-0 upset at Kennesaw State. It’s the first state title for Berkmar soccer. Collins Hill of Suwanee was making its sixth straight appearance in the title game. Twumasi scored to put the Patriots ahead 1-0 two minutes into the second half. Houry added a goal at the 15-minute mark. Don’t miss any Suwanee news. Collins Hill Back in State Soccer Final -- Barely

The Eagles survive Harrison on penalty kicks, and will face Berkmar in the final.

The Collins Hill boys soccer team still has a crown on its head, but it was getting wobbly there for awhile Thursday in Suwanee. The Eagles, who have been to the past five state title games, needed penalty kicks to defeat Harrison, 2-1, after ending regulation tied at 1 and going through two scoreless five-minute overtime periods. Eagles goaltender Jackson Taylor stopped a Harrison penalty shot to seal the victory. Thus Collins Hill will advance to Saturday's final against Gwinnett rival Berkmar, which defeated East Coweta on Thursday. The site is to be determined -- either at Kennesaw State or West Georgia University. It appeared that the Eagles might put the game away in regulation. Collins Hill Boys Reach Soccer Semifinals

The Eagles are seeking their fourth state title in five years.

The Collins Hill boys soccer team kept alive its chance for a second straight state title with a 6-1 victory Saturday over Newnan in Suwanee. With the win, the Eagles advance to the semifinals Wednesday. They will take on Harrison, which defeated Centennial 2-1, according to scoreatlanta.com. The title game will be Saturday, May 18, with the site to be determined, according to ghsa.net. According to the Gwinnett Daily Post, Collins Hill finished with 21 shots, 14 of those on goal, vs. Newnan. Collins Hill Changes Game Time for Soccer Playoff Saturday

The Eagles will face Newnan in Suwanee in the quarterfinals.

Collins Hill High has changed the game time for its Saturday (May 11) quarterfinal boys soccer playoff game in Suwanee, according to reports. The Eagles (15-5) have shifted the game with Newnan to a noon start, to accommodate Newnan's prom. Collins Hill has won two games in the 2013 playoffs after having played in the past five state title games in Class AAAAA. Suwanee high schools have made Newsweek's 2013 list of the nation's top 2,000 high schools. Newsweek released the rankings May 6. North Gwinnett Girls, Norcross Boys Win 7-AAAAAA Titles

Other Suwanee high school teams also begin state tournament play this week.

The North Gwinnett girls and the Norcross boys came away with Region 7-AAAAAA basketball titles Saturday at Mill Creek High. Therefore, they get top seeds in the state tournament, which begins this week. Also, the Peachtree Ridge and Collins Hill boys are part of the Suwanee contingent to the state tournament. In girls play Saturday, North edged Norcross, 58-53, behind 22 points from Lexie Brown and 15 points from Peyton Whitted. In boys region action, Norcross defeated Peachtree Ridge, 55-48. Brandon Johnson led Peachtree Ridge with 13 points. In boys state tourney action, Peachtree Ridge will host Centennial on Wednesday (February 20), and Collins Hill will travel to Alpharetta. Peachtree Ridge Boys, North Gwinnett Girls in 7-AAAAAA Finals

Seedings for the 2013 state basketball tournament will be determined Saturday at Mill Creek High.

The Peachtree Ridge boys and the North Gwinnett girls basketball teams will have chances Saturday (February 16) to claim region titles and top seeds when the 7-AAAAAA basketball tournament concludes. On Friday at Mill Creek High, the Norcross boys beat Collins Hill, 90-50, and the Ridge boys beat Meadowcreek, 77-66, in the semifinals. In girls action, Norcross whipped Mountain View, 66-46, and North Gwinnett beat Duluth, 64-38. The teams that lost Friday will play for third place Saturday. All of the semifinals teams qualify for the state basketball tournament, which begins Tuesday. Former Suwanee Basketball Star Maya Moore Scores in China

The former Collins Hill High player is the rage in the Far East, with her team in the championship round.

Maya Moore, who starred in basketball at Collins Hill High in Suwanee, now is adding to her legacy. The woman who also starred at UConn now is building a strong reputation in China, according to media reports. She recently had a "triple double" -- 43 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists --  to lead Shanxi to a 112-98 win in Game 3 of the championship finals, ESPN reported. -- What are your thoughts of Maya Moore's career? North Gwinnett, P-Ridge Win; Collins Hill Falls to Norcross

Collins Hill suffered its first region loss, and North Gwinnett and Peachtree Ridge continued winning in Suwanee high school football action Friday (Oct. 12). NORCROSS 35, COLLINS HILL 23: The visiting Blue Devils (7-0, 5-0) stayed unbeaten in Region 7-AAAAAA, behind a strong performance from running back Alvin Kamara. He had 300 yards rushing, including TD runs of 80 and 61 yards in the first half. The Eagles (4-2, 3-1) had won four straight. NEXT WEEK: at Meadowcreek. NORTH GWINNETT 47, MILL CREEK 28: At Mill Creek, the Bulldogs won again. QB Michael Haynes had 247 yards passing and four TDs. Collins Hill-Mountain View To Be Televised

It's another weekend of high school football, and Friday's (Sept. 28) game between Mountain View and Collins Hill in Suwanee will be televised (7:30 p.m., www.gpb.org). The Eagles (2-1, 1-0) of coach Kevin Reach have another shot at the playoffs in 2012 (they were a state semifinalist in 2010). QB Brett Sheehan passed for over 275 yards vs. Habersham Central and over 300 against Dacula. Also, punter/kicker Mitchell Blanchard is a strong weapon for Collins Hill. He booted a last-second field goal in the win over Dacula. In Friday's other game, Peachtree Ridge (1-3, 1-1) visits Habersham Central. North Gwinnett (3-1, 1-1) is idle.
