Booster clubs are evolving the annual fundraiser to better support community sponsors.
The age-old high school fundraiser is getting smarter in Suwanee. Booster club boards have found a way to encourage greater patronage with small business sponsors through a multi-use service card. It’s a win-win-win situation. The high school team wins with funding. The local business wins with repeat customers. The purchaser wins with discounts in excess of what they paid for the card. It wasn’t too many years ago that the high school students were asked to sell big coupon books. You remember those, right? Page-after-page of coupons to national merchants for $20. The basketball season is off and running for the Suwanee high schools of Collins Hill, North Gwinnett, and Peachtree Ridge. Here’s a quick summary of their seasons so far.
The situation at winter break time for Suwanee high school basketball teams: Collins Hill boys The varsity Eagles have a new coach in Eric Nathan and young team with two sophomores in the starting rotation. The team has yet to win a game, but their first four losses against non-region opponents were all single digit losses. “In our early games we struggled to figure out how to win close games,” Nathan said via phone. “Now we are working on how to compete with strong teams.” Despite their winless start, there is optimism from Nathan. He’s getting strong play from his two sophomores, Devin Mitchell and JohnCarlos Reyes. Jordan Parker scored three touchdowns to lead Collins Hill to a 51-0 playoff tuneup victory over visiting Meadowcreek Friday night. The Eagles finished the regular season 5-5, but their 4-3 record in Region 7-AAAAA was good enough for the region's fourth playoff seed. They will play at nationally ranked Grayson (10-0) next week in the first round of the playoffs. The Rams are the Region 8-AAAAA champions. Parker scored two of his touchdowns in the first half as Collins Hill built a 22-0 halftime lead. Quarterback Brett Sheehan scored on two runs, and Tyler Henderson and R.J. Burnette also scored TDs. Maya Moore has another title. The former Collins Hill High basketball star led the Minnesota Lynx to a WNBA title in her rookie season. The Lynx defeated the Atlanta Dream on Friday, 73-67, for a three-game sweep of the title series, according to various news reports. Moore had 15 points in Friday's clinching win. Moore, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 WNBA Draft, helped the Lynx post a 27-7 regular-season record. Minnesota was 7-1 in the playoffs. Moore helped UConn to an NCAA women's title in her outstanding career there.

Eagles snap losing streak with 35-13 win over the Wildcats.
Collins Hill built a 28-0 halftime lead on its way to a 35-13 win over Duluth Friday night at Cecil Morris Field in Duluth. The Eagles moved the ball at will in building the first-half lead. The win ended a three-game losing streak for Collins Hill, which improved to 2-3 overall, 1-1 in Region 7-AAAAA. It was third straight loss for Duluth, which fell to 2-3 overall, 0-2 in the region. The Wildcats were playing without starting quarterback Anfornee Stewart, who was out with an ankle injury.
