When the Gwinnett Braves return to Coolray Field on May 18, yet another high-profile Atlanta Braves player is likely to join them. Pitcher Brandon Beachy, who is recovering from off-season arm surgery, could start the G-Braves' Sunday (May 19) game on a rehab assignment, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Beachy, 26, had so-called "Tommy John" elbow surgery in the off-season, and he could have several starts with Gwinnett before being activated again by Atlanta. He'll be familiar to Gwinnett fans -- Beachy pitched for the G-Braves in 2010 and 2011. The Atlanta outfielder began a rehab assignment Thursday at Coolray Field.
Atlanta Braves outfielder Jason Heyward was in the lineup Thursday, but the Gwinnett Braves' losing streak continued. Heyward began an injury rehab assignment with Gwinnett after undergoing an appendectomy in April. He went 0-for-5 Thursday as the designated hitter in a 14-9 loss to Pawtucket at Coolray Field. It was the 12th straight loss for Gwinnett, now 12-23. A season-high crowd of 8,878 fans was on hand. Heyward is expected to remain with Gwinnett through the weekend series at Scranton (Pa.), and then be re-evaluated. See also:

The Gwinnett Braves have announced that Heyward, a starting outfielder for several years with the Atlanta Braves, will begin an injury rehab stint at Coolray Field beginning Thursday (May 9). Heyward, 23, underwent an appendectomy in April and was placed on Atlanta's disabled list. He is hitting .121 (7-for-58) in 2013. For his career, he is hitting .256 with 61 home runs. He is expected to be the designated hitter and bat second in Thursday's morning game (10:35 a.m.) vs. Pawtucket. Pro sports stars with connections to Massachusetts came to Coolray Field in Gwinnett on Tuesday (May 7) to pay honor to the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings It was called "Boston Strong Night." Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan honed his skills while playing for Boston College. Rodney Harrison won a Super Bowl Championship while playing safety for the New England Patriots. Dee Brown played guard for the Celtics. Jason Varitek was a catcher for the Red Sox and won two World Series while playing at Fenway Park. They threw out ceremonial first pitches before the game between the Gwinnett Braves and the Pawtucket Red Sox, a Boston Red Sox farm team. The Gwinnett Braves lost two games Sunday, as well as Brian McCann. But they gained another player from Atlanta. Veteran catcher McCann, who had begun a rehab stint with Gwinnett on Thursday, was to rejoin Atlanta in time for Monday's game at Cincinnati, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. McCann was 0-for-1 in Game 1 of Sunday's double-header at Coolray Field, and did not play in the second game. Gwinnett (12-19) now has an eight-game losing streak after losses of 5-1 and 2-1 to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday. In what could be Brian McCann's final day at Coolray Field in 2013, the Gwinnett Braves are scheduled to play twice. Rain forced Saturday night's game to be called off. The G-Braves and Scranton Wilkes/Barre are scheduled for a double-header Sunday (May 5), beginning at 12:30 p.m. Both games will be seven innings. McCann, the Atlanta Braves' veteran catcher and Duluth High grad, is on an injury rehab assignment after off-season shoulder surgery. Brian McCann continued his rehab stint with the Gwinnett Braves on Friday, but could not help the home team end its losing streak. McCann had a home run and went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the G-Braves' 6-2 loss to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. It was the G-Braves' sixth straight loss, before a season high 6,989 fans. On Thursday, McCann, a Duluth High grad, went 1-for-4 with an RBI for Gwinnett. He is expected to rejoin Atlanta for next week's series at Cincinnati. His homer Friday came in the fourth inning. Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann is working his way back to Turner Field. After playing three games with Class A Rome Braves, McCann started his stint with the Gwinnett Braves at Coolray Field on Thursday (May 2). In October of last year, McCann, a Duluth High graduate, underwent surgery on his right shoulder. While taking practice swings on deck before his first at-bat, a fan shouted to McCann and asked how his shoulder feels. “It feels great,” he shouted back. The G-Braves took on the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on Thursday evening. McCann went 1-for-4 with an RBI single in the 4-1 loss. Game 2 against the RailRiders is Friday night. Brian McCann's "homecoming" will only be part of the fun for the coming homestand for the Gwinnett Braves. McCann, the Atlanta Braves' veteran catcher and Duluth High grad, will continue to work back from offseason shoulder surgery during the G-Braves' eight-game homestand, which begins Thursday, May 2. He already has been getting in some work with the Class A Rome Braves. On Wednesday, McCann concluded that four-game stint with totals of .357 (5 for 13) and three home runs, according to the Rome News-Tribune. “I’m pretty excited about where I’m at,” McCann said before Wednesday's game. Brian McCann is coming home to get ready for his 2013 baseball season. The veteran Atlanta Braves catcher, a Duluth High grad, will begin a rehab assignment with the Gwinnett Braves beginning Thursday, May 2, the G-Braves announced Wednesday (May 1). McCann, 29, underwent shoulder surgery last October, and already has played in some rehab games with the Class A Rome Braves in 2013. He has a .279 career batting average with 156 career homers with Atlanta. It's the third time that McCann has done a rehab stint with Gwinnett, the others being in 2009 (eye infection) and 2011 (left oblique).
