What's Cooking in Suwanee?

Suwanee Music Barn Has Southern Recipe Cookbook

A new book is out featuring Southern recipes submitted by Everett's Music Barn patrons and family members.

It has often been said that there is more to Everett's Music Barn in Suwanee than bluegrass music. An example -- chocolate syrup. A recipe for chocolate syrup from "Ma" Everett, the family matriarch, is one of many recipes included in a new cookbook, "Sweets & Treats -- Everett's Music Barn Cookbook." The compilation was chiefly done by Diane Everett Dunaway, and it includes recipes that were submitted by family members and patrons of the music barn, which has hosted bluegrass gigs since the 1970s. (Bluegrass performances originated at the Everett property in 1964, before the barn was built.) -- Did you submit a recipe for Everett's Music Barn cookbook? Vision and Memories in Suwanee

City officials roll out a draft version of their planning initiative with a nostalgic touch.

Updated 3:48 p.m., April 30 --- "I remember the smell of the creosote plant/when we used to eat on Easter with my crazy old uncle and aunt/They lived in a big house, antebellum style/and the wind would blow across the old bayou when I was a tranquil little child." --"LIfe Is Just A Tire Swing," Jimmy Buffett. Jimmy Burnette remembers music at the Everett property in Suwanee before the barn was even built. He recalls going into the main house on the Everett property in the mid-1960s, and he remembers someone with a string and a washtub. Russell Everett remembers that too, and believes that the fellow is still running an auction service. -- What do you think of Suwanee's 20/20 Vision effort? Tell us in the comments below. Burnette is now …

Planning, Picnic, Pickin' at Suwanee Music Barn

The event Sunday is to roll out the first draft of the 20/20 Vision planning initiative.

Call it Taste of Stonecypher Road. Or Bureaucracy and Bluegrass. On Sunday afternoon, the City Of Suwanee will hold the first community event at one of its most venerable locations, Everett's Music Barn. The property in Old Town has hosted bluegrass performances since the 1970s at its barn, which was built by hand. The property's new owners have been working to raise the profile of the facility, and city leaders also are looking to spur interest in the Old Town area. So the event suits both needs. -- What are your memories of Everett's Music Barn? Tell us in the comments below. The 20/20 Vision effort began last summer with an open house near City Hall. That was designed to gather citizen feedback on long-term planning efforts. Once data …

UPDATE: Suwanee Enjoys a Day of Music

Town Center Park and Everett's Music Barn both have events Saturday.

Updated April 15 Suwanee was alive musically Saturday. About 2 p.m., bluegrass performers took the stage at Everett's Music Barn, the venerable facility on Stonecypher Road. A short distance away at Town Center Park, the bands Yacht Rock Schooner and Yacht Rock Revue began a retro rock show about 3:30 p.m., as part of Atlanta's Greatest Hits Birthday Bash. (See the attached video for a sample from both events. The banjo player is Brenda Patterson of Marietta.) So this was how Saturday began for Tommy Everett, soundman and curator at the music barn: he found something interesting on the porch when he swang by in the morning. There were five cases of water. Underneath was a plastic bag. Enclosed in the plastic bag was a CD of the group The …

Suwanee Music Barn All-Day Event Is Saturday

The Everett site, celebrating a year since reopening, again will have music and potluck dinner beginning at 2 p.m.

The annual Everett Music Barn all-day event is Saturday in Suwanee, and this year it also marks one year since the iconic site reopened under new ownership. "I can't believe this weekend will be one year (since) we reopened, and this was one of the best days of my life," family member Tommy Everett said on the Facebook page. "Rena (Everett McDaniel) has got a lot of stuff to give away, so come on down and help us support the Everett's music barn." Last year, the all-day benefit event was held in June, but the intense heat was bothersome. Events will start at 2 p.m., Tommy Everett said, with a potluck dinner at 5 p.m. Various performers will take the stage in the barn, as well as in the main house on the property. The property is at 4055 …

Suwanee To Have Picnic, Strategy Rollout at Music Barn

A community picnic is planned in April for the draft of the 20/20 Vision plan.

Suwanee city officials are ready to roll out a draft version of the 20/20 Vision strategic plan next month at one of its most iconic sites, the Everett Music Barn. According to the city's website, an "old-fashioned Southern potluck picnic" is planned at the venerable music facility on Stonecypher Road on Sunday, April 29, at 12:30 p.m. The city began its latest strategic planning effort last summer, with an open house near City Hall. The effort has continued with a series of forums and roundtable discussions, all designed to gather citizen input.  During the picnic, a mini-open house is planned to capture feedback. In addition, entertainment will be provided by one of the Everett Music Barn's house bluegrass bands. The event is scheduled …

Suwanee Bluegrass Site Plans Another All Day Event

The legendary Everett Music Barn also has some other new touches.

Everett Music Barn, the iconic Suwanee site that has hosted bluegrass gigs since the 1970s, has some new touches and old traditions for 2012. The traditional "all day pickin" will be Saturday, April 14, from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m., according to a recent announcement. That also will include a pot luck supper at 5 p.m. Bluegrass bands will perform throughout the day and evening. This event was held in June last year, but likely will get more pleasant weather in April. Also, the barn has a new Facebook page, noted Tommy Everett, family member, sound man for the concerts and curator of the barn's musical tradition. That page also showcases the new porches and handrails at the barn, which was built by hand in the 1970s with material from a destroyed…

Happy Birthday, Suwanee Patch: You're 1 Year Old

It all started on Dec. 23, 2010. Now it's time to recap some of the news events that we have brought you in typical Patch fashion.

On Dec. 23, 2010, at 10 a.m., Suwanee Patch went live on the Internet. We didn't know what would happen, just that it would be a new news source, presented in a unique, 21st century way. And indeed, things have been lively. For a city of roughly 15,300, Suwanee has been a constant source of information. We've added bloggers, contests, and other new features, and will continue to do so. But community information and interaction remain our staple, and we want to review some of the top events that happened in our first year. In true Letterman style, here goes: 10. Snow shuts down Suwanee: For a week in January, snow and ice blanketed the city, making even the most routine commute hazardous. Schools closed for five days, pushing graduation …
