North Gwinnett Girls Fall to Hillgrove

Bulldogs lose in the semifinals of the state AAAAA tournament.

This was the most successful season in North Gwinnett High girls basketball history. But it did not result in a state title. North Gwinnett fell to Hillgrove 56-51 during the GHSA semifinals at the Gwinnett Arena on Thursday, and their season is over. However, we take a look at the semifinal game in photos. The defending champion Norcross girls also lost Thursday, meaning that Hillgrove and Milton will meet Friday for the AAAAA title.

Suwanee AD: State Too Small for Class 6-A

The GHSA approves adding a new class and rejects the 4/8 plan for the 2012-13 school year.

Suwanee high schools could join a new Class AAAAAA for the 2012-13 school year, but not everyone thinks it's a good idea. North Gwinnett High Athletic Director Mark Karen said he thinks Georgia is too small to add a Class AAAAAA. "It wasn't that long ago that we only had four classes," he said. "Five was perfect for this state." A published report said a Region 7-AAAAAA would look like this: Collins Hill; Duluth; Mill Creek; Norcross; Mountain View; North Gwinnett; Peachtree Ridge; Meadowcreek; Habersham Central. Georgia high schools will eventually crown six state champions in each sport as the state moves from a Class AAAAA to Class AAAAAA system. By a vote of 26-24, the Georgia High School Association Executive Committee, meeting in …

Update: GHSA Votes for New 6-A Class

Suwanee schools could be affected in 2012-13.

Updated 1:55 p.m., May 10, 2011 The Georgia High School Association executive committee Tuesday voted in a new 6-A classification that could include Suwanee schools.  The 50-member panel, meeting in Macon, rejected a controversial 4/8 system that would have changed groupings during playoffs. Suwanee's three high schools -- Collins Hill, North Gwinnett and Peachtree Ridge -- have been competing in Class AAAAA, formerly the largest of five in the state. The new class will be effective for the 2012-13 school year. Formal classification assignments are not set yet, and may not be determined until the fall. The top 15 percent in enrollment are expected to go to the new 6-A class. The formal head count likely will be this fall. The committee was…

Norcross Honors State Champions

Mayor Bucky Johnson and the Norcross City Council proclaimed 2011 the "Year of the Blue Devils" in honor of Norcross High boys and girls state basketball champions.

It's been more than half a century since a Georgia high school had both its boys and girls basketball teams crowned state champions. Atlanta's Murphy High was the last, way back in 1958. So, when Norcross won its dual titles this year, Mayor Bucky Johnson decided the achievement deserved special recognition. At a rauc0us awards banquet at the school last night, amidst ear-splitting cheers, long hugs and high fives, Johnson read a proclamation declaring 2011 the Year of the Blue Devils. He then handed the keys to the city of Norcross to girls head coach Angie Hembree and boys coach Jesse McMillan. Both teams will visit Six Flags Over Georgia and be guests of honor at a banquet commemorating their achievement, compliments of the city of …

GHSA Punts on Reclassification

The executive committee will meet again in May on plans for new alignment.

High school athletic directors will have to wait a bit longer to learn whether the Georgia High School Association will adopt a proposal  that would radically alter interscholastic competition in the state. The GHSA's 50-member Executive Committee decided Monday in Macon to table any decision on reclassification until a called meeting in May. The committee was scheduled to vote Monday on what has been called the 4/8 plan, which would reduce the number of classifications from five to four during the regular season, then split the four into an upper and lower tier for the playoffs, thus producing eight classifications. The 4/8 plan was the one recommended by a 7-5 vote of the GHSA's Reclassification Committee after a combative meeting Sunday…

Hoops Frenzy in Final Round

Deadline is 4 p.m Wednesday to win Patch gear in our high school basketball contest.

And then there was one. We’re down to one round of our inaugural Patch Georgia High School Basketball Challenge, which means you have one more chance to win some Patch gear before the Georgia High School Association crowns its 2011 AAAA and AAAAA hoops champions Friday. The cream of Georgia’s basketball teams has risen to the top to reach the semifinals, so we’re looking for true excellence in prognostication for the finale of our contest. We’ll award a Patch T-shirt or a Patch baseball cap to anyone who achieves perfection and picks all eight semifinal winners and all four champions correctly. (If more than 10 of you go 12-0, we’ll have to hold a drawing to decide who gets the goods, but all of you will share in the glory.) The deadline …
