Residents in Suwanee and elsewhere in Georgia will now be able to get updates of inclement weather and road conditions from the Georgia Department of Transportation via Facebook, Twitter and a newly designed website. A preview of the new inclement weather section of the department’s website was a highlight at the November meeting of the Georgia Transportation Board. The page went live Nov. 17 and can be viewed at www.dot.ga.gov/winterweather. In addition to the new webpage, social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter will be used to distribute information in the event of severe weather. These communication tools will be manned by staff from GDOT for who might find it easier to follow weather alerts and updates through social media…

In a surprise move, the state Transportation Board chairman announced that DOT Commissioner Vance Smith tendered his resignation Wednesday.
In a surprise move, the Georgia Transportation Board chairman Wednesday announced the resignation of Vance Smith as commissioner of the Department of Transportation. “I have today accepted the resignation of Vance Smith as commissioner of the Department of Transportation,” state transportation Board Chairman Rudy Bowen said in a press release. He went on to announce that Smith had appointed the department operations director, Keith Golden, to the position of deputy commissioner prior to his resignation. In keeping with state law, the deputy will serve as interim commissioner. Smith will remain as an advisor to the department until the end of the year. Motorists traveling through Georgia on Labor Day won’t have to contend with traffic delays due to construction. The Georgia Department of Transportation announced it would suspend all construction-related lane closures from 5 a.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6. Officials, however, are urging motorists to use caution nevertheless as traffic is expected to be heavy. Also, crews may still be working close to highways and some long-term closures may be required in the interest of safety. Updated Aug. 26, 2011 McGinnis Ferry Road's new four-lane extension over I-85, which will provide major traffic relief for Suwanee, will open mid-morning Tuesday, Aug. 30, officials announced Thursday. "This project is coming to a close," Georgia DOT engineer Randall Davis said in a media release. The $20.7 million project, which uses federal stimulus funds, has been going since planning began in the early part of the past decade. Attention Suwanee commuters. Are you planning to use the high occupancy toll (HOT) lanes later this year? Motorists intending to travel in what are currently HOV (high occupancy vehicle) lanes may now register for the Peach Pass -- a small electronic sticker that will be used to bill motorists for their time in the HOT lane. For the past several months, the Georgia Department of Transportation has been working to convert the HOV lanes to HOT lanes. The $11.7 million project includes the installation of tolling technology and equipment, new signs and new sign structures along 16 miles of I-85 express lanes in Gwinnett and DeKalb counties. As part of the conversion of the existing High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes on I-85 to High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes, the Georgia Department of Transportation will continue work to install more than 60 signs along the I-85 corridor this week. Daytime and nighttime work is planned. Traffic pacing may occur between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. This week, as weather permits, one or two segments of the HOV or inside lanes along the median wall in both directions will be closed during the overnight hours. Northbound lane closures will take place between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. and southbound closures will occur from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Up to three lanes could be closed after midnight. Suwanee commuters already are benefiting from the McGinnis Ferry Road project at Interstate 85. Lanes of traffic are open for motorists on Burnette Road heading toward Satellite Boulevard. And work continues on new lanes on Old Peachtree Road near Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road. The project, which involves more than $20 million in land deals and construction costs, is scheduled to be completed in September. Federal stimulus funds also were used. The Georgia Department of Transportation work also involves extending McGinnis Ferry Road over I-85 via a four-lane bridge, which will connect Satellite Boulevard with such streets as Gwinco Boulevard and provide a quicker route to cities such as Lawrenceville.

The Georgia Department of Transportation has advised that work along Interstate 85 this week will require closure of some HOV lanes in Gwinnett County. Daytime work along the median wall will close the lane in some locations in both directions. Several Gwinnett cities and CIDs submit requests to state, ARC officials.
Suwanee officials have submitted a transportation "wish list" for two projects totaling $6.8 million to state transportation officials and the Atlanta Regional Commission. "Context sensitive reconstruction" of Buford Highway from Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road to McGinnis Ferry Road is one item, with an estimated price tag of $5.8 million. Also on the list is pedestrian crossings on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, at $1 million. And the McGinnis Ferry Road bridge extension over I-85 is on the list, technically as a Gwinnett County project. That effort is scheduled for completion in September.
