As sports weekends go, it was a rough one for Atlanta-area sports fans. The Georgia Bulldogs, the Atlanta Braves and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets all lost -- and in some cases, it was not just another loss. Triple ouch. Happy New Year, BCS Fans

The biggest football bowl games start Monday. Did anybody mention money?

It used to be simple -- four football bowl games on New Year's Day, or Jan. 2 if New Year's Day fell on Sunday, as it does in 2012. Now, the long arm of television has the big games scattered out for a week. But the big ones now are the Bowl Championship Series games, which begin Monday and conclude with the LSU-Alabama title game on Jan. 9. The attached graphic, provided by H&R Block, shows that bowl games mean millions of dollars to the participating schools and the host cities. As with the regular season, the term "amateur athletics" seems odd. But people love the football, so here is the schedule for this year's BCS games (all BCS games are on ESPN).
