Working On Christmas: All Is Calm, All Is Bright

For police, fire and others, it's no holiday. And no one minds.

For Geneva Huff, the Christmas routine began at 5 am when she reported to the restaurant at the Marriott Courtyard. "The first thing I do is wash my hands," said Huff, who has worked at the hotel site on Gwinco Boulevard in Suwanee for seven years. Then she starts putting out the "cold stuff": fresh fruit, milk, juice, etc. For dispatcher Pam Bananto and Cpl. Fred Schumacher, the day began at 6 am when they reported to the Suwanee Police Department headquarters on Buford Highway near Town Center Park. And for the crew at the Gwinnett County Fire Department station on Buford Highway, the day began at 7 am, and would continue for the next 24 hours. A Burning Desire For Safety

Gwinnett fire officials recently held a tree-burning demonstration to stress holiday hazard prevention.

Chances are the last thing on most everyone's mind is holiday fire safety at this time of year. As a powerful reminder of what can go wrong if you are not properly caring for a live Christmas tree, the Gwinnett County Department of Fire and Emergency Services and Lowe's Home Improvement Store in Suwanee recently teamed up to present a  demonstration of what can happen if we become complacent about fire safety this time of year. Lt. Jeremy Webb of the Gwinnett County Fire Department addressed the most common cause of holiday fires. "Human error is typically the cause of Christmas tree fires," Webb said.
