Audio from 911 Call, Gwinnett Fire Released from Suwanee SWAT Standoff

Recordings include suspect Lauren Brown's 911 call and early radio reports from a Gwinnett firefighter explaining the situation.

Gwinnett Police released audio from the April 10, 2013 standoff in Suwanee, during which Lauren Brown held five Gwinnett firefighters hostage and was subquently shot and killed by police. The audio includes a 911 call by Brown, who told a dispatcher that he was suffering from a heart attack and later held the firefighters hostage after they had arrived at his home on Walnut Grove Way. Also included is Gwinnett Fire Department radio traffic, including a report from a firefighter that Brown was armed and wanted to get the utilities to his home re-connected. Suwanee SWAT Standoff: 'It Was a Typical Call'

Captor is dead, Gwinnett firefighters and a Gwinnett police officer are OK after the incident ends in gunfire off Taylor Road.

The emergency call to Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services began Wednesday in Suwanee as a "typical call," according to spokesperson Tommy Rutledge. It ended about 7:30 p.m., some four hours later, with the caller dead after exchanging gunfire with a Gwinnett Police SWAT team. Five firefighters who were held captive were treated for superficial wounds at Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville. A Gwinnett Police officer who was wounded in the hand also was in "good" condition, a GMC spokesperson said late Wednesday. "It's a first for me," Rutledge said. NEWS NEARBY: Fire Damages Popular Gwinnett Restaurant

Dreamland BBQ, a popular restaurant located in Peachtree Corners, caught fire Wednesday evening (January 16) around 5:30 p.m. The fire appears to have caused extensive damage. Gwinnett firefighters were called around 5:20 p.m. and had the fire under control shortly after 6 p.m., said Lt. Colin Rhoden, spokesman for the county fire department. "There were several patrons in the restaurant at the time, and the manager was able to get them and the employees out of the restaurant," said Rhoden. Rhoden said the restaurant manager saw smoke in the back of the restaurant, immediately called 911 and got everyone out of the building. Video: Fireworks Safety Tips From Gwinnett Fire

Stay safe this New Year's when handling sparklers.

The Gwinnett County Fire Department held a demo earlier in December 2012 to show how to safely use fireworks and sparklers this season. According to the department, statistics show that in 2010, there were an estimated 8,600 injuries caused by fireworks treated in the U.S. hospital emergency rooms. While the only type of fireworks legal in Georgia are sparklers, the National Fire Protection Association reports that sparklers can cause serious burn injuries. They burn at about 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit and are typically viewed by parents as relatively harmless fireworks for children, according to Gwinnett Fire. WITH VIDEO: Vehicle Totally Damaged by Fire Near Mall of Georgia

A blaze broke out near the Longhorn restaurant on Saturday evening. Another vehicle also was damaged.

Updated Aug. 6, 2012 A vehicle was destroyed by fire Saturday evening, Aug. 4, when flames broke out outside the Longhorn restaurant near the Mall of Georgia in Buford, according to a Gwinnett Fire spokesperson. Gwinnett Fire spokesperson Lt. Colin Rhoden said that a caller about 7 p.m. said that fire was close to the building, and Gwinnett Police noted that the fire was spreading quickly. Lightning Strike Causes Outbuilding Fire in Gwinnett

Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services crews responded to several storm related incidents on Monday, May 21.

An outbuilding was completely destroyed by fire in Buford after lightning struck a nearby tree during Monday evening's storms. Firefighters were dispatched to the 2900 block of Bart Johnson Road (off Hamilton Mill Road) in Buford at 7:25 p.m. after a 50x50 outbuilding caught fire. According to a Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services (GCFES) press release, the outbuilding was near a travel trailer, propane tanks and a single family residence. Gwinnett Fire/EMS Rescues Two From Buford Dam

Incident happened late Saturday.

Updated 10:04 a.m., April 29 Gwinnett Fire-Swift Water Rescue rescued two individuals and one dog stranded on an island in the Chattahoochee River near Buford Dam late Saturday, according to a media release. Lt. Eric Eberly said Sunday that the individuals reported in a 911 call that their boat was quickly taking on water and was about to sink when they made it to the island. Within a short period of time, swift water crews found the party of three in no distress, Eberly said. No injuries were reported. Names were not released. Don’t miss any Suwanee news. Gwinnett Budget Review: Some Highlights

Government dealing with change and challenges in many areas of the county.

The Gwinnett County budget review sessions are done, and now county leaders will begin the process of finalizing the Fiscal Year 2012 spending plan. Dealing with a $30 million revenue shortfall will be difficult, but the sessions also showed a county that still continues to deal with strong growth and change. Some highlights from the sessions: -- The county's senior population continues to grow. By the year 2020, it will exceed 200,000 people and will be larger than the population of school age children (5-19) for the first time. The county has had 91,830 home delivered meals and 59,837 senior center meals to date in 2011. -- The county's Community Activities department plans a solar blanket pilot project for the Mountain Park pool in 2012…
