Summer Magic at Suwanee Library

The Gwinnett Library's Summer Reading Program begins with a unique program.

Keith Farnham couldn't make the rain disappear Monday, but he made some smiles appear on the faces of several youngsters at the Suwanee Library. Farnham, a magician and ventriloquist, brought his show to the Gwinnett Library branch to launch the Summer Reading Program. He rolled out several types of tricks and fun in his show, all in front of a podium that read "I Love To Read." Also, it was a chance for the financially strapped library system to emphasize another of its fund-raising initiatives. "Bucks for Books" is done in conjunction with the Sonic fast-foot chain. From June 1-Aug. 31, 25 percent of the proceeds of participants' checks at any Gwinnett County Sonic restaurant will be donated back to the Friends of the Gwinnett County …

Bestselling Author: Municipalities Are 'Gutting' Libraries

Atlanta native Karin Slaughter will be in Peachtree Corners on Friday to sign copies of her latest book, 'Fallen,' and raise awareness of the needs of public libraries.

The Washington Post has called her “one of the best crime novelists in America.”  But for Atlanta native Karin Slaughter, author of such bestselling novels as Undone, Broken, Fractured, Beyond Reach, Triptych, Faithless and - her latest release - Fallen, the real crime is the underfunding and outright closing of libraries. “Libraries are the last place any community should cut money,” Slaughter says. “I mean, I understand some things have to be cut, but a lot of these municipalities are gutting the libraries and it’s so short sighted.” A staunch supporter of libraries, Slaughter sites statistics that show a tremendous increase in library usage across the country - up more than 23 percent between 2006 and 2009 – as well as data that …

Dooley's New Passion Is Flowering

The former UGA coach/AD returns to Gwinnett for another gardening talk Wednesday.

Anyone who wants to talk football with Vince Dooley these days needs to wait. The school's winningest football coach (201 victories from 1964-88) and former athletic director now has a new passion: gardening. "I've been bitten by the gardening bug, and there is no cure for the infection," he said at a speech at Gwinnett Tech last October. Dooley will return to Gwinnett Tech in Lawrenceville on Wednesday, April 20, at 10 a.m. for another gardening discussion, in conjunction with the school's spring plant sale.  His passion is such that there is now a Vince Dooley hydrangea and a Vince Dooley camellia, and he also is a published author: “Vince Dooley’s Garden: The Horticultural Journey Of A Football Coach.” Also, his Athens home, the same …
