A recap of some top news stories from Suwanee and Gwinnett.

As we begin a new week, it's time to review some top Suwanee and Gwinnett news stories from the week that just passed. CHARTER SCHOOL AMENDMENT: There was plenty of election news, but a development that really hit home in Gwinnett was the so-called Charter School Amendment. Georgia voters approved an amendment that would allow the state to set up charter schools without local school board approval. Gwinnett School Leaders Having 'Election Watch' in Suwanee

Superintendent and board members will follow the returns at headquarters in Suwanee.

Gwinnett Schools Superintendent Alvin Wilbanks and school board members will be holding an "election watch" Tuesday (November 6), according to a GCPS announcement. The gathering will be at the cafeteria in the Instructional Support Center in Suwanee, the announcement said. Among the returns they could be following will be re-election races involving board members Dr. Mary Kay Murphy (District III), Louise Radloff (District V) and Carole Boyce (District I). GCPS District III Incumbent Increases Campaign Contributions

Murphy now has almost $14,000 in cash contributions. She is being challenged by Jen Falk of Berkeley Lake.

Dr. Mary Kay Murphy, the Gwinnett school board District III member who is seeking re-election, has pulled in more campaign contributions. As of the September 30 reporting period, Murphy, a Peachtree Corners resident, has about $13,900 in cash contributions, according to state records. The latest reports show some major contributions to Murphy's campaign: $2,500 by GCAE Fund for Public Education of Snellville; and $1,000 by Ty and Stephanie Hanna of Duluth. Their business is listed as Galaxy Capital. Loretta Christoper, a Peachtree Corners City Council member, contributed $300 to Murphy. District III includes North Gwinnett, Peachtree Ridge, Duluth and Norcross high schools. Murphy, a Republican, is being challenged by Democrat Jen Falk of …

Peachtree Ridge Educator a GCPS Teacher of Year Finalist

Six teachers are in the running. The award will be given on Nov. 1.

Dean Landers, a teacher at Peachtree Ridge High in Suwanee, is among the finalists for 2013 Teacher of the Year for Gwinnett County schools. Landers and five other Gwinnett educators have made it to the final round of competition. The winner will be named Thursday, Nov. 1, at ceremonies (6:30 p.m.) at the Gwinnett Center, according to a GCPS news release. Landers teaches physics to juniors and seniors at Peachtree Ridge. The other finalists are Erica Leach, Walnut Grove Elementary; Deborah Johnson, Berkmar Middle; Celisa Edwards, Dacula Middle; Heidi Mikulecky of Richards Middle; and Jay Nebel of Norcross High. Public Invited to Review GCPS Curriculum

Parents and members of the community may join Gwinnett County Public Schools members to review proposed curriculum materials.

Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) invites parents and members of the community to join GCPS staff members in a review of proposed curriculum materials. Parents may provide input on the proposed materials by participating in the public review, which will be held at headquarters in Suwanee. GCPS holds an extensive review before adopting materials for classroom use. Parents, community members, teachers, and administrators review materials to ensure alignment with the school system’s Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) curriculum. During this year’s review, scheduled to run from Sept. 17-28, GCPS staff and members of the Gwinnett community will review non-fiction books for grades K-12, teacher resources for grades K-8 Language Arts, and …

School Days Again in Suwanee and Gwinnett

The 2012-13 school year begins on Monday, August 6, for the state's largest system.

There was a drizzle in the air Monday, Aug. 6, on Level Creek Road in Suwanee as activity buzzed again at North Gwinnett High. About 10 a.m., a bell rang, and thousands of students hit the hallways and the doors during the first class day of the 2012-13 school year. And at North Gwinnett, it's not the same old campus. Construction at the rear of the school near the football stadium -- which again will be busy soon -- is under way. Suwanee, Gwinnett Go Back to School on August 6

The state's largest school system cranks up Monday for 2012-13.

One sign of the end of summer: school starts. And so it is in Suwanee and the rest of Gwinnett County on Monday (Aug. 6), when students head back to Gwinnett County schools (GCPS) Students at Collins Hill, North Gwinnett and Peachtree Ridge high schools get things started at 7:10 a.m., so prepare for additional traffic in those areas. -- What are you most looking forward to about the school year?
