Family of Quadruple Amputee Pleads for GCPS Policy Change

Friends and family of Hannah Rinehart make a case for creating a sick leave pool during the Gwinnett County School Board meeting, but left with no promises.

Family and friends filled the room as the Rineharts spoke before the Gwinnett County School Board on Thursday in Suwanee, pleading with the board to change the district’s sick leave policy.  Mark Rinehart, Hannah's husband, is a math teacher at South Gwinnett High School.  He now has a little over 20 days of sick leave left before he loses his pay and his insurance. According to family, that’s not nearly enough time, and so they are asking that the school board allow fellow teachers to donate their paid time off (PTO).  Mark's hope is that people will be able to donate their unused PTO to him. GCPS Accepts Grant for After-School Program

Money to fund program to help at-risk students graduate.

At Thursday night's monthly Gwinnett County School Board meeting that recognized accomplishments at several high schools, the challenges facing another also were addressed. While individuals, organizations and athletic teams from Grayson, North Gwinnett, Meadowcreek, Brookwood and Parkview high schools enjoyed special recognition, the board attempted to change what it considered underachievement by students at South Gwinnett in Snellville. Specifically, the board, meeting at its Suwanee headquarters, voted to accept $272,610 to fund the first year of a three-year 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant to enhance South's second-year FUTURE program, an after-school enrichment program in which students meet four days weekly for three …
