Talk about a nail biter! Blue Devil fans who attended the AAAAAA championship game Saturday night between Norcross and Lovejoy were sitting on the edges of their seats most of the night waiting. It wasn't until the fourth quarter that team showed it knew how to dig deep to win. Two big touchdowns in the fourth quarter sealed the deal and Norcross fans supported them with cheering and ringing cowbells from the stands. -- What's your reaction to Norcross High's state title? After an undefeated 14-win season, the Norcross Blue Devils added one more win Saturday (December 15) at the Georgia Dome. Norcross High defeated Lovejoy High 21-14 in the 2012 state football championship, earning the Class AAAAAA title for the first time. The game had a slow start, with nothing on the board until Lovejoy scored a 60-yard touchdown in the second quarter for a 7-0 lead. Norcross kicked a field goal in the third quarter, but the Wildcats answered with another touchdown minutes later, taking a 14-3 lead. Norcross' winning points came in the fourth quarter, with Alvin Kamara's 61-yard touchdown reception, which was followed by another touchdown by the running back. The Norcross High School Blue Devils are headed for the state football finals after winning Friday night (December 7) in the Georgia High School Association semifinals. Eight-time state champion Buford (11-3) is in another final after a 21-10 win over Cartersville Friday in Class AAA. Class AA Greater Atlanta Christian was eliminated Friday from the playoffs with a 42-14 loss to Jefferson. Undefeated and top-ranked Norcross (14-0) reached the first state final in school history with a 41-27 Class AAAAAA win over visiting Colquitt County. And then there was one. Norcross won Friday, but North Gwinnett, Mill Creek and Parkview all went down to defeat in the AAAAAA football playoff quarterfinals. North lost 21-6 at Lovejoy, Mill Creek lost to North Cobb 42-35, and Parkview lost at home to Colquitt County 31-15. So Norcross, which defeated Camden County 34-20, will advance to face Colquitt County next Friday in the semifinals, and North Cobb and Lovejoy also will meet. Those winners will advance to the title game in the Georgia Dome the following weekend. North Gwinnett's offense struggled, as QB Michael Haynes finished with just 75 yards passing. Georgia Public Broadcasting will air the game, which starts at 7:30 p.m., and will stream the game live online at gpb.org. Also, PlayOn sports will stream the game live at www.playonsports.com. The Bulldogs of Suwanee swarm over Grayson 28-10 in AAAAAA playoffs.
There will be a new champion in AAAAAA football in 2012. North Gwinnett saw to that Friday with an impressive 28-10 victory over Grayson, the large-school winner in 2011. Bulldogs coach Bob Sphire is not ready to crown his team as the new champion yet. "We've got a tall order in Lovejoy (the Bulldogs' next playoff foe)," Sphire said. "They pushed us around in seven-on-seven drills in the preseason." But Friday in Grayson, it was North that pushed its foe around. The Bulldogs used turnovers and a swarming defense to take a 9-3 halftime lead and then break the game open in the second half. The Grayson Rams, defending large-school state football champions, prepared Friday to host North Gwinnett in a crucial second-round AAAAAA playoff game. Grayson is ranked No. 3 by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution; North Gwinnett is No. 4. Both teams are 10-1, and have won eight straight games. The Rams are led by defensive end Robert Nkemdiche, one of the nation's most sought after recruits.
