Here's a look at a tasty second-round playoff games for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
On Thanksgiving Day, millions of Americans will plop down in front of the TV to watch football (there are three Turkey Day NFL games). On Friday, our favorite sons from nine Gwinnett County schools, including Suwanee, will add to the football smorgasboard with their own seasonings in the second round of the playoffs. Here's a look at the spread (Games scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.): THE MAIN COURSE North Gwinnett at Grayson Savor the aroma of this game between two state-ranked teams playing in what has to be considered the best matchup in Class AAAAAA this week. Seven schools from AAAAAA still are active in the second round -- and nine from Gwinnett overall.
After the first week of the 2012 AAAAAA high school football playoffs, one thing is clear -- Gwinnett County football is coming up big. Seven teams from the county still are alive in the AAAAAA playoffs' Sweet Sixteen phase. Bulldogs will face defending champion Grayson next in AAAAAA playoffs.
North Gwinnett stayed alive Friday (November 16), but Collins Hill was eliminated as the AAAAAA playoffs began. NORTH GWINNETT 49, JOHNS CREEK 19: QB Michael Haynes had 248 yards passing with four touchdowns. North led 35-7 after three quarters. The Bulldogs will travel to 8-AAAAAA Grayson, which defeated Wheeler 49-9, next week. WEST FORSYTH 66, COLLINS HILL 41: Eagles QB Brett Sheehan had 349 yards passing with five TDs. However, West Forsyth's Jake Wieczorek had 277 yards rushing and three touchdowns. West Forsyth will host 8-AAAAAA Parkview next week. North Gwinnett, runner-up in 7-AAAAAA, will host Johns Creek, and Collins Hill, No. 4 in the region, will travel to West Forsyth. As the 2012 AAAAAA football playoffs begin, North Gwinnett continues to advance in the state rankings. The Bulldogs, who defeated Suwanee rival Peachtree Ridge last Friday to close the regular season, now are No. 4 statewide, according to Georgia High School Football Daily. Norcross, which ended North's three-year run as Region 7-AAAAAA champions, is ranked No. 2. Defending state champ Grayson is No. 3, and South Gwinnett came in at No. 10. North Gwinnett won and Collins Hill lost in close games Friday (November 9) as Suwanee teams ended the 2012 regular season. Also, playoffs begin next Friday (November 16) for the Bulldogs and the Eagles. North will host Johns Creek (No. 3 seed from 6-AAAAAA) and Collins Hill will travel to West Forsyth (No. 1 seed in 5-AAAAAA), according to the GHSA bracket. North Gwinnett travels to Peachtree Ridge, and Collins Hill tackles Mill Creek. Playoffs are in the future for some of them.
It will be all about playoff seedings and bragging rights Friday (November 9) as Suwanee teams end the 2012 football regular season. North Gwinnett travels to the Lions Den to take on Peachtree Ridge, and Collins Hill visits Mill Creek. Norcross already has clinched the 7-AAAAAA title, ending North's three-year run, and so the Devils earn the top seed. North (6-1 in the region) also has sewn up a playoff spot and the No. 2 seed, because of its wins over Collins Hill and Mill Creek (both 5-2 in the region). So that Collins Hill-Mill Creek game will be to determine the region's final two spots before playoffs begin next weekend. With one week remaining in the 2012 regular season, the North Gwinnett Bulldogs are again among the state's elite high school teams. The Bulldogs are No. 5 in the latest statewide AAAAAA ranking by Georgia High School Football Daily. North has been in the top 10 all season. Its only setback was in September to Norcross, the Region 7-AAAAAA champion. Though the Bulldogs had their three-year region title run broken, they still appear headed for the playoffs with a 6-1 region record.
