The eatery near I-85 is having some festivities and giveaways for its debut.
Another sign of new life in the Suwanee Gateway -- Schlotzsky's Deli is opening for business. According to a company news release, Schlotzsky's will open Thursday, May 2, on Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road near I-85. It will be in a revamped building that once housed a Mrs. Winner's chicken eatery. This building, at 2941 Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road, is across from the new Suwanee Police substation at I-85. The global company celebrates grand opening of large new facility on Satellite Boulevard near I-85.
Mitsubishi Electric is a global company with more than 110,000 employees worldwide, and it trades on Japan's Nikkei index. But if employees needed to get in touch with the boss Wednesday (April 17), they had to patch in to Suwanee. The computer animated video explains how toll lanes from Old Peachtree Road to Hamilton Mill Road would operate.
If you missed last month's public hearings regarding the extension of the I-85 toll lanes northward, you can now learn more about the project courtesy of the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). The GDOT recently posted a short computer animated video depicting how the new toll lanes will operate (see above). The GDOT has proposed extending the toll lanes from Old Peachtree Road near Suwanee to Hamilton Mill Road, in the Dacula/Buford area. As part of the project, an additional lane would be constructed to avoid losing capacity in the free lanes. The Georgia Department of Transportation has scheduled two public hearings in March to discuss extending the I-85 HOT lanes another 10 miles northward. The first hearing will be held Thursday, March 21 at 4 p.m. at the Gwinnett Center Atrium located at 6400 Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth. The second hearing will take place Thursday, March 28 at 4 p.m. in Braselton. The meeting will be held in the community room of the Braselton Municipal building located at 4982 Highway 53, Braselton. The GDOT is considering extending the toll lanes from Old Peachtree Road near Suwanee to Hamilton Mill Road, in the Dacula and Buford area or possibly extending the lanes to Chateau Elan near Braselton. The state agency has a new post in the area, and will be getting additional officers.
The new Georgia State Patrol post opening soon in Gwinnett also will mean that Suwanee Police will be getting some help from the state agency. Suwanee Police Chief Mike Jones said Thursday that the state agency will now work traffic accidents on I-85 in the Suwanee city limits. Also, he said the GSP will be welcome to work Suwanee traffic cases on surface streets in the city limits. "They're here to help us," Jones said. He added that Suwanee Police still could assist the GSP. The GSP announced recently that it will open a new post in Duluth, for added police presence. The vacant May Queen Hotel on Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road was purchased from a bank for $1.25 million. The building, called a 'nest for crime,' will be destroyed.
The City of Suwanee has purchased a shuttered hotel property near I-85, in keeping with residents' desires to see blighted properties eliminated in the Gateway area. The former May Queen Hotel, which has been closed for about a year for safety reasons, is now city-owned. The purchase price was $1.25 million, with First Intercontinental Bank being the seller, according to a city news release. The city plans to demolish the existing structures on the property, which is located at 2955 Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road, and land-bank the property. “This purchase represents one more step in the City of Suwanee’s efforts to improve the Suwanee Gateway and ensure the long-term viability of this commercial area,” Mayor Jimmy Burnette said in the news …

Work has begun along Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road.
Suwanee officials have begun another project that is designed to improve the Gateway area near I-85. Workers recently began a landscaping effort along Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road near Exit 117 that will include trees and streetscaping. The project runs from Sawmill Drive to the new police substation just south of I-85, according to a city news release. Eleven plazas, which will include benches and trash cans as well as landscaping, and two smaller seating areas are being created on each side of the interstate ramps and around the intersection, the release said. Also, the I-85 ramps will be re-landscaped. The project will includes 161 elm, maple, crepe myrtle, and magnolia trees; 6,146 holly, juniper, and rose bushes; 4,255 plugs of liriope…

The move comes after a delay from September's meeting.
After a delay of a few weeks, the Suwanee City Council on Thursday approved regulations that will allow a self-storage facility near I-85 in the Gateway area. The council, at a special called meeting before Thursday's workshop, unanimously approved both the rezoning and the special use permit that will allow construction at 341 Sawmill Drive. The two-acre lot is located behind a Chevron station nearest I-85, and now contains a vacant building. Owner Amburgy Properties of Duluth will construct and operate the new facility, under the Storgard name.
